A Solo Adventure in Yakushima's Ancient Forests
Day 8: Coastal Views and Evening Brews: A Day of Exploration in Yakushima
Discover Yakushima's coastal beauty at the lighthouse and observatory, followed by local flavors and a relaxing evening at a cozy bar.
Island Views and Evening Hues
Today was all about soaking in the coastal charm of Yakushima, a blend of scenic views and local experiences that made for a truly memorable day. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the predictability of coding for the open road, even if Olivia and Thando are thousands of miles away in Kelowna. The freedom to explore, to stumble upon hidden gems, and to connect with the local culture is something I wouldn't trade for anything.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It’s always interesting to see the mix of travelers and locals at airport restaurants, each with their own story. I went for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was the perfect fuel for the day’s adventures. Sipping on some green tea, I planned my route, feeling the familiar buzz of excitement for what lay ahead.

First on the agenda was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive there was an experience in itself, navigating narrow, winding roads that offered glimpses of the coastline. The lighthouse stands proudly at the tip of Cape Nagata, a beacon of maritime safety since 1897. The views from the lighthouse were simply magnificent. The rugged coastline stretched out before me, the East China Sea shimmering in the morning sun. I could see the faint outlines of Kouerrabu Island and the Mishima Islands in the distance. It was a perfect spot for some photography, capturing the raw beauty of Yakushima's natural landscape. I even found a small, hidden shrine nearby, a testament to the island's deep-rooted spiritual traditions.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next, I headed to the East China Sea Observatory. The observatory offered panoramic views of the sea, even more expansive than those at the lighthouse. The fresh sea breeze and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocky coastline created a calming atmosphere. I spent a good hour there, just soaking it all in and snapping photos. It's amazing how different the sea looks from different vantage points, each offering a unique perspective. The observatory was relatively quiet, allowing for a peaceful experience. I could see why it's a favorite spot for birdwatching, though I didn't spot any rare species myself today.

For lunch, I decided to try Kamogawa Restaurant, a local favorite known for its fresh seafood and traditional Japanese dishes. It was a bit of a drive, but well worth it. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, a testament to its popularity. I ordered the Sashimi Set Special, which included a variety of local fish, miso soup, and rice. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, each piece melting in my mouth. I also tried the deep-fried flying fish, a Yakushima specialty. It was crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, a unique and delicious experience. The owner was incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home. It reminded me of the small, family-run restaurants back in Kimberley, where the food was always served with a side of warm hospitality.

As the day wound down, I decided to check out BAR しらはま for a relaxing evening. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the island, it had a cozy, intimate atmosphere. The bartender was a friendly local who knew his way around a cocktail. I opted for a local craft beer, wanting to taste the flavors of Yakushima. The bar was dimly lit, with soft music playing in the background. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. I struck up a conversation with a couple of other travelers, sharing stories and experiences. It's amazing how travel can bring people together, forging connections that transcend borders and cultures.

The rain started as I was finishing up my beer. I made a dash for it, but was soaked by the time I got back to my guesthouse. It didn't matter. I was happy. I thought of Olivia and Thando, and how much they would have loved this day. Maybe one day I'll bring them here, and we can explore Yakushima together.
Tomorrow marks the end of my solo adventure in Yakushima. I plan to visit the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall and the Botanic gardens, aiming to soak up as much of the island's unique charm as possible before heading back to Kelowna. For breakfast, I'll try Smiley, and for lunch, Wakadaisho. I'm also hoping to pick up some gelato from Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi before I leave, a sweet ending to a bittersweet departure. It's been an incredible journey, one that has reaffirmed my love for nature and my passion for exploration. I can't wait to see what adventures lie ahead.
