Exploring Naoshima's soul through art, shrines, and local flavors, creating unforgettable family memories on this artistic island paradise.
Naoshima's Hidden Gems: Art, Shrines, and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of diving deeper into Naoshima's artistic soul, moving beyond the grand museums and into the intimate spaces of the Art House Project and the local community. It's amazing how much this island continues to surprise me, revealing new layers of creativity and connection with each passing day.
Our day began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast at maimai. Olivia, Thando, and I enjoyed some delicious Japanese-style breakfast sets. It's a cozy spot that set a perfect tone for the day ahead.
With our stomachs full, we headed to the Honmura district to explore the Art House Project, starting with the Go'o Shrine. This wasn't just another shrine visit; it was an immersive art experience. Designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto, the shrine is a blend of traditional architecture and contemporary art. The glass staircase connecting the main shrine to the underground rock chamber was particularly striking, symbolizing the connection between earth and sky. Thando was fascinated by the large stone placed there, learning that ancient Japanese people revered such natural objects.

Art isn't just something you see; it's something you experience, something that changes you.
Walking through the Art House Project felt like stepping into the heart of the community. The project transforms empty houses into art spaces, each telling a unique story of the island's history and culture. It's a brilliant way to revitalize the area, blending art with daily life. The residents clearly embrace this fusion, adding their own touches to the neighborhood's artistic vibe.
Next on our list was the Miyanoura Gallery 6. Housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, the gallery is a testament to the island's ability to reinvent itself. The Setouchi Archive project was particularly interesting, showcasing the research and collection of materials related to the Seto Inland Sea's landscape and culture. Olivia, with her nursing background, appreciated the community engagement aspect of the project. It was inspiring to see how art can foster dialogue and new perspectives on the island.

For lunch, we decided to try Kinosaki Udon Naoshima. This place is a local favorite, known for its authentic, handmade udon noodles. The aroma of freshly prepared noodles filled the air as we stepped inside. I opted for the bukkake udon, topped with sticky grated yam and tempura. The texture of the noodles was perfect, and the toppings added a delightful mix of flavors. Thando enjoyed his simple kake udon, slurping up the noodles with gusto. It was a comforting, satisfying meal that gave us a true taste of Naoshima.

After lunch, we explored the Art Island Center, a gallery and bookstore that embodies Naoshima's artistic spirit. The center offers a diverse collection of art books, foreign publications, and unique gifts. I picked up a book on Japanese contemporary art, while Olivia found a beautiful set of postcards featuring local artists. Thando was thrilled to find a colorful picture book about the island's history. It's a great place to discover new artists and learn more about the island's cultural scene.

As evening approached, we made our way to Gumbo Hut Shioya for dinner. This Cajun restaurant, located near the Naoshima Bath I♥湯, offered a surprising twist to our culinary journey. The retro atmosphere and friendly owner made us feel right at home. I ordered the gumbo, of course, and it was fantastic – a rich, flavorful stew that warmed us from the inside out. Olivia enjoyed the jambalaya, while Thando devoured his plate of shrimp and grits. It was a fun, unexpected meal that added another layer to our Naoshima experience.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Naoshima offers beyond its famous museums. The Art House Project, Miyanoura Gallery 6, and the local restaurants provided a glimpse into the island's soul, revealing the creativity, community, and history that make it so special. It's these hidden gems that truly make a trip memorable, offering authentic experiences that connect you with the place and its people.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Naoshima Fishing Park and the Seaside Gallery. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery, exploring the island's natural beauty and artistic expressions. Perhaps we'll even unwind at the Honmura Lounge & Archive in the evening.
As I sit here writing, I'm reminded of why we chose Naoshima for our family art adventure. It's not just about seeing art; it's about experiencing it, about connecting with the community, and about creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as a software developer, I am particularly impressed how the island has reinvented itself using art as a catalyst.
And I am also happy that I remembered to pack my camera, although I did forget the travel adapter, and will need to find one tomorrow!
