Solo Exploration of Chefchaouen: The Blue Pearl of Morocco
Day 7: Chasing Sunsets and Blue Dreams: A Day of Reflection in Chefchaouen
Explore Chefchaouen's viewpoints, savor Moroccan flavors, and reflect on the beauty of the Blue Pearl. A solo journey of discovery.
A Farewell to the Blue Pearl
As my time in Chefchaouen nears its end, I found myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had in this blue-washed city. Today was all about soaking in the views, savoring the local cuisine, and simply letting the serene atmosphere wash over me. It’s amazing how a place can seep into your soul and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
The day began with a leisurely breakfast at Cafe Clock. I decided on a Berber omelet, a delightful mix of eggs, tomatoes, and spices, paired with a spiced cappuccino. The cafe itself is a vibrant, multi-level space with a mix of Western and Moroccan influences. The aroma of fresh herbs filled the air, and the friendly staff made me feel right at home. It’s a bit pricier than other local spots, but the quality and atmosphere are well worth it.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to find the City View Point. The walk took me through the familiar blue alleys, each corner revealing a new picturesque scene. October in Chefchaouen is quite pleasant; the weather is mild, with temperatures ranging from the low 50s to the low 70s. The air is crisp, and the light has a golden hue, perfect for exploring. I made my way towards the Spanish Mosque, a short but uphill walk from the medina.

As I ascended, I crossed the Ras el Maa river, spotting a few local women doing their laundry. The trail was easy to follow, and soon enough, I reached the Spanish Mosque. From this vantage point, the entire blue city sprawled beneath me, nestled against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. The view was breathtaking. I could see the terracotta roofs peeking out from the blue canvas, and the mountains in the distance added a dramatic flair. I spent a good hour there, simply absorbing the scenery and taking photos.
Sometimes, the most beautiful views come after the hardest climbs.
After descending from the viewpoint, my stomach started to rumble, signaling lunchtime. I decided to try Restaurant Populaire, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. Opting for a traditional tagine, I wasn't disappointed. The rich flavors of the stew, combined with the tender meat and vegetables, were a delight. It was a hearty and satisfying meal that fueled me for the rest of my day. Reflecting on my lunch, I realized how much I appreciate these simple, authentic experiences. It's these moments that truly connect me to a place and its culture. I find that when I return to Berlin, I often crave the flavors and spices of Moroccan cuisine, a reminder of my adventures here.

Next on my list was Dar Antonio Chefchaouen. This traditional Moroccan accommodation is known for its hospitality and authentic charm. Antonio, the host, is incredibly welcoming and friendly, offering recommendations and tips for navigating the city. The rooms are traditionally decorated, with access to a shared bathroom and a terrace. While the rooms are simple, they are clean and comfortable, providing a perfect base for exploring Chefchaouen. I spent some time chatting with Antonio, learning more about the local culture and history. It's these personal connections that make traveling so rewarding. He shared stories about the city's Andalusian heritage and the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

As evening approached, I sought out Restaurant Jbaria for dinner. This cozy spot is a bit away from the tourist crowds, offering a peaceful atmosphere. I opted for the bissara and lentils, both highly recommended. The portions were generous, and the bread was incredibly fresh. The bissara, a traditional Moroccan soup made from fava beans, was particularly delicious, seasoned perfectly with olive oil and spices. The lentils were equally flavorful, making for a satisfying and comforting meal. I enjoyed the laid-back service and the chance to savor my meal in peace.

After dinner, I decided to revisit Cafe Clock for a relaxing evening. The cafe transforms into a cozy bar at night, with soft lighting and live music. I ordered a Moroccan mint tea and sat on the rooftop terrace, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The sky was clear, and the stars twinkled above me, creating a magical ambiance. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection. I thought about Hans and Sophie back in Berlin, and how much I missed them. I made a mental note to bring them back here someday, to experience the magic of Chefchaouen together.
As I sipped my tea, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this solo adventure. It's allowed me to connect with myself and the world in a way that I never thought possible. Chefchaouen has a way of slowing things down, of making you appreciate the simple things in life. The blue walls, the friendly locals, the delicious food – it all adds up to an unforgettable experience. I will forever cherish the memories I've made here.
Tomorrow marks the end of my journey in Chefchaouen. I plan to visit the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen and Bab El Hammar. I'm also looking forward to trying Café Restaurant Marisco Twins for breakfast, Restaurant blue dream for lunch, and The Magic Lamp House of Aladin for a farewell dinner. Before heading to Tangier, I'll stop by CHAOUEN GIFTS for some last-minute souvenirs.
As I prepare to leave this enchanting city, I carry with me a sense of peace and gratitude. Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl of Morocco, will forever hold a special place in my heart. I am already anticipating sharing my memories and photos with my students in Berlin, hoping to inspire them to embark on their own adventures.
