A Day of Rejuvenation in Zao Onsen
Today was all about embracing the tranquility of Zao Onsen. After several days of travel and exploration, Pieter and I were ready for a day dedicated to relaxation and immersing ourselves in the natural beauty that this charming town has to offer. We were looking forward to experiencing the local culture and savoring the regional cuisine. It was a day to recharge and connect with the serene atmosphere of this Japanese gem.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Omiya Ryokan, where we are staying [i]. The traditional Japanese breakfast set the perfect tone for a day of cultural immersion [i]. The delicate flavors and artful presentation were a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Fuelled up and ready to explore, Pieter and I set out to discover the hidden gems of Zao Onsen.

Our first stop was Genshichi Roten no yu Zao Onsen, an outdoor hot spring bath that promised a rejuvenating experience. As we approached, the scent of sulfur filled the air, a telltale sign of the therapeutic waters that awaited us. Nestled amidst lush greenery, the rotenburo (outdoor bath) was a sight to behold. The natural surroundings created a sense of serenity, making it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Stepping into the warm, mineral-rich water, I felt my muscles instantly relax. The water, sourced directly from the hot spring, is known for its skin-beautifying properties. As I soaked, I couldn't help but reflect on the simple pleasures of life. The gentle breeze, the sound of rustling leaves, and the warmth of the water created a symphony of sensations that soothed my soul. Pieter and I spent a blissful hour in the rotenburo, letting the stress of our busy lives melt away. It was exactly what we needed to reconnect with each other and with nature.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in moments of stillness and reflection.
After our revitalizing hot spring experience, we decided to explore the Iroha Marsh, a picturesque marshland known for its stunning landscapes. The marsh is a short bus ride from the center of Zao Onsen, and the journey itself was a treat, with scenic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. As we arrived at the marsh, we were greeted by a tranquil scene of lush greenery and crystal-clear waters.

We followed the well-maintained walking paths that meandered through the marsh, taking in the breathtaking views at every turn. The vibrant flora and fauna created a tapestry of colors and textures that captivated our senses. Dragonflies danced over the water, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers. It was a photographer's dream, and I couldn't resist capturing the beauty of the marsh with my camera.
As we strolled through the marsh, we came across a secluded spot overlooking a small pond. We decided to take a break and simply soak in the tranquility of the surroundings. It was a moment of pure bliss, surrounded by nature's beauty and the peaceful silence of the marsh. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a serene and untouched place.
For lunch, we ventured to Kasheru, a restaurant in Zao Onsen known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with traditional decor and friendly staff. We were eager to try the local specialties and experience the culinary delights of the region.

Pieter and I shared a selection of dishes, including savory ramen and delicately prepared sushi. Each bite was a burst of flavor, and we savored the fresh, local ingredients that the restaurant is known for. The ramen was particularly delicious, with a rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. The sushi was equally impressive, with fresh, high-quality fish that melted in our mouths. It was a truly memorable dining experience, and we left Kasheru feeling satisfied and content.
After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at Yoneya Department Store, a local institution known for its authentic Japanese souvenirs. The store was a treasure trove of local crafts, traditional snacks, and unique gifts. We spent hours browsing the shelves, admiring the intricate details of the handcrafted items and sampling the local delicacies.

I was particularly drawn to the beautiful ceramics and lacquerware, each piece a testament to the artistry of the local artisans. Pieter, on the other hand, was fascinated by the traditional snacks, sampling everything from rice crackers to pickled plums. We ended up buying a selection of souvenirs for our friends and family back home, as well as a few treats for ourselves.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Jingisukan Lodge for dinner, drawn by the promise of a traditional mutton barbecue experience. The lodge had a rustic and inviting atmosphere, with the enticing aroma of grilled meat filling the air. We were seated at a table with a built-in grill, ready to embark on a culinary adventure.

We ordered the mutton barbecue set, which came with a generous portion of thinly sliced mutton, an assortment of vegetables, and a selection of dipping sauces. The staff explained the traditional Japanese techniques for grilling the mutton, and we eagerly got to work. The mutton was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the vegetables added a delightful crunch and sweetness. We savored each bite, enjoying the interactive and communal experience of grilling our own meal. It was the perfect way to end a day of relaxation and exploration in Zao Onsen.
As we walked back to Omiya Ryokan, under a starlit sky, we reflected on the day's adventures. Zao Onsen had exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. We felt rejuvenated and grateful for the opportunity to experience such a serene and authentic place.
Tomorrow, we plan to ascend Mount Zaō and explore the Zao Onsen Ski Resort [i]. I'm excited to see the panoramic views from the mountain and experience the beauty of the surrounding landscape. We also plan to visit Cafe ALPINA for a relaxing drink [i]. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to share it with you all!
