Experience the beauty of Mount Zaō, savor local cuisine, and unwind in cozy cafes in Zao Onsen. A perfect day of exploration and relaxation.
A Day of Exploration and Culinary Discovery
Today was another incredible day in Zao Onsen! Pieter and I set out to explore the natural beauty of this region, followed by indulging in some of the local culinary delights. The blend of outdoor adventures and delicious food made for a truly memorable experience. I'm so glad we decided to spend our time in this charming corner of Japan, and I can't wait to share all the details.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Omiya Ryokan. The traditional Japanese breakfast set us up perfectly for a day of hiking. I always appreciate the variety of flavors and textures, from the savory grilled fish to the comforting miso soup. It's such a delightful way to start the day, and it's something I always look forward to when traveling in Japan.

After breakfast, we headed straight for Mount Zaō. The Zao Onsen Ski Resort transforms into a hiker's paradise during the summer months. While it's renowned for its 'snow monsters' in winter, the summer offers lush greenery and stunning views. The weather was perfect for hiking, with temperatures hovering around a comfortable 23°C. Though there was a chance of rain, the skies remained clear, allowing us to fully enjoy the scenic trails.

We decided to take one of the ropeways up the mountain to make the most of our time. The ride itself was breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the surrounding forests and valleys. As we ascended, the air became noticeably fresher, and the views more expansive. It’s amazing how quickly the landscape changes as you gain altitude.
Once at the top, we embarked on a hike towards Okama Crater Lake, also known as the 'Five-Color-Lake'. The trails were well-maintained, making the trek relatively easy. Along the way, we were surrounded by alpine flora, which added bursts of color to the landscape. I was particularly fascinated by the Hakusan-Ichige, a delicate white-petaled anemone.
Reaching Okama Crater Lake was truly awe-inspiring. The lake's water changes color depending on the weather and sunlight, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. It felt surreal to stand at the edge of a volcanic crater and witness such a unique natural phenomenon. Pieter, with his keen interest in geology, was particularly captivated, pointing out the various rock formations and explaining the lake's volcanic origins.
After spending a good hour soaking in the views at Okama Crater Lake, we started our descent. Instead of taking the ropeway back down, we opted for a longer hiking trail that led us through some beautiful beech forests. The sunlight filtering through the leaves created a magical atmosphere, and the sounds of nature were incredibly soothing. It was the perfect opportunity for some 'forest bathing,' a Japanese practice known for its stress-reducing benefits.
By the time we reached the base of the mountain, we had worked up quite an appetite. Luckily, our lunch destination was just a short bus ride away. We headed to Unite Cafe, a charming spot known for its healthy meals and locally sourced ingredients. The cafe has a cozy, resort-like atmosphere that made us feel instantly relaxed.

I opted for one of their set lunches, which included a choice of brown or white rice and a tofu hamburg patty. Pieter chose a comforting curry with a side of vegetable soup. The menu was thoughtfully designed, encouraging creativity and allowing us to mix and match different dishes. It was a delightful meal, and we both appreciated the emphasis on fresh, local produce.
Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences are those that combine physical activity with culinary exploration.
After lunch, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through Zao Onsen town. The town itself is quite picturesque, with its traditional Japanese inns and hot spring baths. We explored the local shops, browsing through souvenirs and local crafts. I picked up a small, hand-painted Kokeshi doll as a memento of our trip.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a bit of relaxation. We found a local 'ashi-no-yu,' or foot onsen, where we could sit and soak our feet in the hot spring water. It was a simple pleasure, but it was incredibly soothing after a long day of hiking. The free foot bath was a pleasant resting place, allowing us to unwind and observe the comings and goings of the town.
For dinner, we had reservations at Hachiman, a yakiniku restaurant located on Takayu Street. The restaurant is known for its Zao beef, lamb, and Yamagata pork, all grilled at the table. The ambiance was warm and inviting, making it an ideal spot for a cozy dining experience.

We ordered a selection of meats and vegetables, and the grilling began. The Zao beef was particularly delicious, tender and flavorful. Pieter, who is always up for trying new things, even sampled the lamb and was pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. While the restaurant might lack a ventilation system, as some reviewers noted, the delicious food and friendly service more than made up for it.
After dinner, we decided to check out Cafe ALPINA for a nightcap. The cafe is known for its cozy atmosphere and stunning views. We enjoyed locally sourced teas and freshly brewed coffee while taking in the peaceful surroundings. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As we walked back to Omiya Ryokan, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Zao Onsen has a unique charm that blends natural beauty with culinary delights. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in the tranquility of the mountains and then indulge in the flavors of the region.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Zaojizoson and the Zao Ropeway Zao Sanroku Station. I'm particularly excited to see the Jizo statues and enjoy more panoramic views from the ropeway. We'll also be trying out Jupeer for lunch and stand MY for dinner, continuing our culinary exploration of Zao Onsen. And perhaps a bit of shopping at the ROSSIGNOL STORE!
I'm so glad we added Zao Onsen to our Japan itinerary. It's a hidden gem that offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. If you're looking for an authentic Japanese experience, I highly recommend adding this charming town to your list. Until tomorrow, happy travels!
