Arrival in Moulay Idriss: A Sacred Start

After a smooth flight from Munich to Fez and a short, scenic drive, Lena and I arrived in Moulay Idriss Downtown, ready to dive into the heart of Moroccan culture. The air here is different—calmer, somehow imbued with a sense of history and reverence. Our homestay family greeted us warmly, and after settling in, we set out to explore this sacred city.

Our first day was all about soaking in the atmosphere and getting our bearings. Moulay Idriss, nestled at the base of Mount Zerhoun, is a town that immediately captivates you with its whitewashed buildings and winding streets. It’s a place where history feels palpable, and every corner holds a story.

We started our exploration in Moulay Idriss Downtown, the heart of the city. The streets were bustling with locals going about their daily lives. The medina, with its narrow alleyways, was a sensory overload in the best way possible—the scent of spices, the vibrant colors of the textiles, and the sounds of bartering all blended together into a symphony of Moroccan life.

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. - Ibn Battuta

One of the first things I noticed was the absence of cars in many parts of the medina. Donkeys are still a primary mode of transport here, adding to the town's timeless feel. Lena, with her keen eye for detail, was immediately drawn to the intricate patterns on the doors and the vibrant colors of the handwoven carpets displayed in the shops.

For breakfast, we stopped at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, a charming local spot known for its traditional Moroccan fare. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast of msemen (buttery pancakes), fresh bread, and mint tea. The mint tea, in particular, was a revelation—sweet, fragrant, and the perfect start to our day. The hospitality was wonderful, setting a welcoming tone for our visit.

After breakfast, we wandered towards the قيسارية مولاي ادريس, a local shopping area. Here, we found a treasure trove of local crafts, from leather goods to pottery and spices. I was particularly fascinated by the woodworking, admiring the skill and artistry of the craftsmen. Lena, always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, picked up a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl.

As we strolled through the market, we were greeted by friendly vendors eager to share their stories and showcase their crafts. It was interesting to see how commerce and community were so intertwined here. Unlike the more tourist-centric markets in larger cities, this felt authentic and genuine. The experience reminded me of the local markets back in Havlíčkův Brod, where the personal connection between vendor and customer is just as important as the transaction itself.

For lunch, we decided to try La Baraka, a restaurant recommended by our homestay host. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of Moroccan dishes. We opted for the tagine, a slow-cooked stew that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The aroma alone was enough to make our mouths water, and the taste did not disappoint—tender meat, flavorful vegetables, and a rich, aromatic sauce.

After lunch, we made our way to the Small Terasse with a view on the mosque. This spot offered a panoramic view of the city, with the iconic green-tiled roof of the Zawiya of Moulay Idriss I dominating the skyline. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, the view from the terrace provided a glimpse into the heart of this holy city.

The Zawiya is a religious complex that houses the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and a key figure in the Islamization of Morocco. Moulay Idriss I, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, fled to Morocco in the 8th century and established a base in Volubilis before moving to the more defensible location that is now Moulay Idriss. His legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of this town, making it a significant pilgrimage site for Moroccans. It's believed that five pilgrimages to Moulay Idriss are equivalent to one hajj to Mecca for those who cannot afford to travel to Mecca.

Standing on the terrace, gazing at the sprawling town below, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the history and spirituality of this place. The sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the whitewashed buildings, and the call to prayer echoed through the valley, adding to the magical atmosphere.

As evening approached, we decided to try SCORPION HOUSE for dinner. This restaurant, set high on a hillside, is known for its stunning views and unique ambiance. The climb up the narrow, winding streets was an adventure in itself, but the reward was well worth it.

The restaurant is owned by the same person who owns Cafe Clock in Fez, and it shows in the eclectic decor and attention to detail. The menu featured a mix of Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisines, with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, each bursting with flavor and vibrant colors. For our main courses, Lena chose the fish, while I opted for the kefta kebabs. Both were cooked to perfection and presented beautifully.

But the real highlight of Scorpion House was the view. From our table on the terrace, we could see the entire town of Moulay Idriss spread out before us, with the ruins of Volubilis silhouetted in the distance. As the stars began to appear, the scene became even more enchanting. It was the perfect end to our first day in Morocco, a moment of tranquility and beauty that we will not soon forget.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Site Archéologique de Volubilis and the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er to delve deeper into the region's history and culture. We'll start the day with breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق and have lunch at Volubilis. In the evening, we're thinking of checking out Dar Zerhoune.

As I reflect on our first day, I am struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. From our homestay family to the vendors in the market and the staff at the restaurants, everyone we met welcomed us with open arms. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people and cultures. And in that regard, Moulay Idriss has already exceeded my expectations. I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you as we continue to explore this fascinating country.

The Moussem of Moulay Idriss is a religious festival that occurs every August and brings an influx of pilgrims. This festival celebrates Moulay Idriss and dates back to the Marinids. Perhaps we will see some of the beginning festivities as we explore more of the city!

I'm also aware that August in Morocco can be quite hot. Fortunately, Moulay Idriss, nestled in the hills, enjoys a slightly milder climate than the plains below. We're making sure to stay hydrated and take breaks during the hottest parts of the day. Lena, ever practical, reminded me that I had forgotten the portable charger and travel guidebook! I will have to pick those up tomorrow.

Despite the heat, the charm of Moulay Idriss is undeniable. It's a place where the past and present coexist, where tradition and modernity blend seamlessly. And as we continue our journey, I am excited to uncover more of its hidden treasures.
