Exploring the Historical Charms of Fes with Friends
Day 9: A Day of Ancient Wonders: Exploring Volubilis and the Heart of Fes
Discover the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis and the vibrant cultural heart of Fes with Jiří and friends on their Moroccan adventure.
Whispers of the Past, Echoes of the Present
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time that took us from the ancient Roman ruins of Fes-Volubilis Tour. It’s amazing how much history is layered within this land, each era leaving its mark on the landscape and the culture. Setting out with my friends, I knew we were in for a memorable experience, but I had no idea just how deeply we would connect with Morocco's past.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mom's touch. I opted for the shakshuka, Bida Matisha, as it was warm and comforting, which fueled me up for the day ahead. Lena chose the English breakfast, as she wanted something simple.
The drive to Volubilis was scenic, the landscape unfolding before us like a tapestry. Rolling hills and olive groves painted a picture of rural Morocco, a stark contrast to the urban energy of Fes. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city's vibrant, albeit sometimes overwhelming, atmosphere. I couldn't help but think about how much this landscape reminded me of the Czech countryside, a comforting thought that made me feel a little closer to home.
Arriving at Volubilis, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the site. The ruins stretched out before us, remnants of a once-thriving Roman city. Mosaics, columns, and arches stood as silent witnesses to a bygone era, each stone whispering stories of emperors, merchants, and everyday life. It was incredible to imagine what this place must have been like in its prime, a bustling hub of commerce and culture.
We wandered through the ruins, our footsteps echoing through the ancient streets. The mosaics were particularly impressive, intricate patterns and vivid colors still visible after centuries of exposure to the elements. I tried to picture the artisans who had created these masterpieces, their skill and dedication evident in every tile. I pulled out my camera, snapping photos of the mosaics, the columns, and the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Lena was particularly fascinated by the House of Orpheus mosaic, with its depiction of the mythical musician charming animals with his lyre. She spent a good half-hour sketching it in her notebook, capturing the details with her artist's eye.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After Volubilis, we made a quick stop at Bab Makina Plaza. The plaza itself is steeped in history, having served as a venue for important events and celebrations over the centuries. The towering walls and imposing gates transported me back to medieval times, imagining the plaza filled with soldiers, merchants, and citizens going about their daily lives. It's fascinating how these ancient spaces can still evoke such a strong sense of the past.
We then headed back to Fes to experience the medina. For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Soultana, a traditional Moroccan restaurant. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with intricate tilework and ornate lanterns creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The aroma of spices filled the air, tantalizing our senses and whetting our appetites. I ordered the Tajine Meat & prunes with Amande, while Lena opted for the Tajine Vegetables. The food was delicious, the flavors rich and complex, a testament to the culinary traditions of Fes. The restaurant also offered Moroccan cooking classes, which I think Lena will be interested in.
After lunch, we ventured into the heart of the medina, a labyrinth of narrow streets and bustling souks. The medina of Fes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's easy to see why. The maze-like streets are filled with shops selling everything from spices and textiles to ceramics and metalwork. The air is thick with the sounds of vendors hawking their wares, the scent of exotic perfumes, and the energy of the crowds.
We spent the afternoon exploring the souks, getting lost in the maze of streets and alleyways. I was particularly interested in the metalworking souk, where artisans were hammering and shaping copper and brass into intricate designs. The skill and craftsmanship on display were truly impressive, a testament to the enduring traditions of Fes.
Lena, with her keen eye for detail, was drawn to the textile souk, where she spent hours examining the colorful fabrics and intricate embroidery. She eventually purchased a beautiful silk scarf, a souvenir of our time in Fes.
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves in Fes Antiques, a shop filled with treasures from Morocco's past. The shop was a veritable museum, with antique furniture, ceramics, and artwork on display. I was particularly drawn to a collection of old maps, each one a window into a different era of Moroccan history. I ended up buying a small, intricately carved wooden box, a memento of my time in Fes.
For dinner, we decided to try Les Mystères de Dar Tajine, enticed by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and intimate, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. I ordered the lamb tajine, while Lena chose the chicken pastilla. The food was exceptional, the flavors rich and complex, a perfect end to a day of exploring Fes.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Aben Danan Synagogue and Borj Sud, and in the afternoon, Lena has booked us into a cooking class at Fez Cooking School at Palais Amani. I'm looking forward to learning more about Moroccan cuisine and experiencing the city from a different perspective. We'll finish the day with drinks at Empire bar.
As I reflect on today's journey, I'm struck by the layers of history and culture that make Fes such a fascinating destination. From the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis to the bustling souks of the medina, every corner of this city has a story to tell. And as I continue to explore, I know that I'm only just beginning to scratch the surface of this rich and complex culture. What a day!
