Kyoto's Last Hurrah

As our nine-day adventure in Kyoto draws to a close, I wanted to soak up every last bit of this incredible city. Today was all about trains, towers, and tasting some of Kyoto's most famous treats. I was determined to make the most of our final day, and I think we succeeded!

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Kyo-komono Kinugasa. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

All Aboard at the Kyoto Railway Museum

Our first stop was the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone who appreciates history and engineering, I was really looking forward to this. I remember as a child in Chibuto, I was always fascinated by the trains that would pass through our town, connecting us to the wider world. Seeing the evolution of Japan's railway system up close was truly impressive. My friends and I spent hours wandering through the exhibits, admiring the meticulously preserved locomotives and learning about the innovations that shaped Japan's railway history. They had a display of different graphic designs that were used over the decades, which I found particularly interesting.

The Kyoto Railway Museum isn't just a collection of trains; it's a journey through time, showcasing the ingenuity and passion that drive technological advancement.

One of the highlights was the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, a part of the larger complex. Seeing those magnificent steam engines up close, feeling the sheer size and power of them, was awe-inspiring. It reminded me of the stories my grandfather used to tell about the trains in Mozambique, how they were a symbol of progress and connection.

We even got to see a miniature railway station and multiple tracks. It was a very interesting show that lasted about 10 minutes. We also saw a Thomas the Tank Engine exhibition.

Reaching New Heights at Kyoto Tower

Next, we headed to Kyoto Tower. I'd seen it countless times in photos, but standing at its base, looking up at its towering height, was something else entirely. We took the elevator to the observation deck, and the view was simply breathtaking. From 100 meters above the ground, we had a 360-degree panorama of Kyoto. Even though it was a bit hazy, we could still make out landmarks like Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nishi Hongan-ji Temple.

The tower itself is quite the landmark. I learned that it was built in 1964 to commemorate the Tokyo Olympics and designed to resemble a lighthouse. It definitely stands out against the more traditional cityscape of Kyoto. It's funny, standing there, I couldn't help but think of the CN Tower back in Canada. While Kyoto Tower might not be quite as tall, it certainly has its own unique charm.

After taking in the views, we explored Kyoto Tower Sando, the commercial complex at the base of the tower. It's filled with restaurants, souvenir shops, and even a public bathhouse! We picked up a few last-minute gifts for our families back home and grabbed a quick snack before heading to our final destination.

A Culinary Adventure at Nishiki Market

No trip to Kyoto is complete without a visit to Nishiki Market, also known as Kyoto's Kitchen. This bustling marketplace is a feast for the senses, with over 100 shops and stalls selling everything from fresh seafood to pickled vegetables to traditional sweets. It's a narrow street, but it is over 400 meters long.

We arrived at Nishiki Market ready to sample some of the local delicacies. Our first stop was Izutsu Yatsuhashi Honpo - Takashimaya Kyoto for lunch. I tried the Yatsuhashi, a traditional Kyoto sweet made from glutinous rice flour, sugar, and cinnamon. It was unlike anything I'd ever tasted before – sweet, chewy, and slightly spicy. I bought a box to take home to Fatima; I know she'll love it.

As we wandered through the market, we sampled all sorts of interesting foods. We tried sashimi at Kimura Fresh Fish, soymilk donuts at Konna Moja, and tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) at Miki Keiran. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. I even tried tako tamago (octopus egg) at Kai, which was an octopus stuffed with a quail egg and seasoned with soy sauce. It was definitely an adventure for my taste buds!

I also stopped by Kazari Nishiki, a shop that sells seasonal Japanese goods and Western clothing with a Kyoto touch. I picked up a beautiful silk scarf for Sheila; I know she'll love the intricate design. The owner of the shop changes the products each month, so you can feel the atmosphere of Kyoto in even the smallest details.

For dinner, we decided to splurge a little and went to Premium Pound Gion for some high-quality Japanese beef. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Kyoto. I think I ate some of the best beef I have ever tasted in my life.

As I reflect on our time in Kyoto, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared. From the serene temples to the bustling markets, this city has captured my heart in a way I never expected. I'm especially grateful for the chance to have experienced it with my friends. Sharing these moments with them has made the trip even more special.

Tomorrow, we head back to Edmonton. While I'm looking forward to seeing Fatima, Nelson and Sheila, I know I'll miss the beauty and tranquility of Kyoto. I'm already dreaming of our next adventure!
