Cultural Exploration of Fes with Friends
Day 8: A Day of Souks and Serenity in Fes
Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Fes as you explore the Henna Souk, Place Rcif, and the ancient medina with friends.
Wandering Through Ancient Wonders
Today was a sensory explosion! Fes truly knows how to captivate, and I'm thrilled to share my experiences navigating its bustling souks and serene corners. It was a day of vibrant colors, intoxicating aromas, and the echoes of centuries past, all woven into the fabric of daily life. I embraced the chaos and found moments of peace amidst the vibrant energy of this incredible city.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant La Cabane. It's a cozy spot where we fueled up with some local pastries and strong coffee, preparing ourselves for a day of exploration. I must admit, the pastries were so delicious that I had more than one! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a perfect start before diving into the heart of Fes. It was the perfect way to prepare myself for the day ahead!
Next up was the Henna Souk. What a place! The air was thick with the scent of spices and traditional cosmetics. The Henna Souk is one of the oldest and most picturesque markets in the Fes Medina. It’s easily identified by the two huge gnarled plane trees in the center of the market. I was fascinated by the displays of colorful ceramics, rows of spices, and of course, the henna itself. My friend, let's call her Sarah, was particularly interested in getting a henna tattoo, so we spent a good while chatting with one of the local artists. She ended up with a beautiful design on her hand. I was tempted to get one myself, but I decided to hold off for another time. We wandered through the stalls, admiring the craftsmanship and haggling for a few souvenirs. It's an experience that truly immerses you in the local culture. The souk was more than just a market; it was a vibrant community hub where artisans showcased their skills and traditions. It was a feast for the senses, and I found myself completely lost in the sights, sounds, and smells.

The soul of Fes is not just in its monuments, but in the daily lives of its people, their crafts, their stories, and the vibrant energy that permeates every corner.
After the Henna Souk, we made our way to Place Rcif. This bustling square is a dynamic hub where the essence of Moroccan culture truly comes alive. It is one of the only places inside the medina that can be reached by car. The square was teeming with activity, a real melting pot of locals and tourists alike. We watched artisans displaying their crafts, from intricate pottery to stunning textiles. The aroma of delicious Moroccan cuisine filled the air, making it hard to resist trying some local delicacies. I opted for a tagine, a slow-cooked stew with meat and vegetables, and it was absolutely divine. We sat at a small cafe, sipping mint tea and soaking in the atmosphere. I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the city and its people. The square served as a reminder of the rich history and traditions that have shaped Fes over the centuries. It was a place where the past and present intertwined, creating a unique and captivating experience.

Of course, no trip to Fes would be complete without exploring the Fez old medina. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways, a maze of shops, mosques and workshops. It felt like stepping back in time. The Medina of Fez preserves the memory of the capital founded by the Idrisid dynasty between 789 and 808 A.D. Getting lost was inevitable, but that was part of the fun. Every corner turned revealed something new and exciting, a hidden courtyard, a colorful fountain, or a craftsman at work. We visited the Al-Attarine Madrasa, a stunning example of Islamic architecture, and marveled at its intricate details. We also stopped by the Chouara Tanneries, where leather is dyed using traditional methods. It was a pungent experience, but fascinating nonetheless. The medina was more than just a collection of buildings; it was a living, breathing organism, full of life and energy. I felt a sense of awe and wonder as I explored its hidden corners, discovering the secrets of this ancient city.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Darna fes. It's a charming bistro that offers a modern take on Moroccan cuisine. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was relaxed and inviting. I particularly enjoyed the pastilla, a sweet and savory pie filled with pigeon and almonds. It was a culinary experience that I won't soon forget. Greta would have loved this place, I will definitely bring her here when we come back to Morocco together.

Before dinner, I wanted to pick up a few gifts for Greta and my family back in Berlin, so we stopped by Medin Art. I had read about it being the medina's first concept store, showcasing Moroccan and Morocco-based designers. I found some unique t-shirts and some lovely woven scarves. The salesman, Ahmad, was incredibly helpful and attentive, making the shopping experience even more enjoyable.

As the sun began to set, we treated ourselves to a memorable dinner at Eden at Palais Amani. The setting was magical, dining under mature citrus trees by a fountain. The food was exquisite, a perfect blend of traditional Moroccan flavors with a modern twist. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. The atmosphere was serene and peaceful, a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of the medina. We savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the day.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, our last day in Fes, we plan to visit Mellah, Bab Chems, and the Merinide Necropole. I am particularly excited about visiting the Merinide Necropole, as I have read it offers panoramic views of the city. It's hard to believe our trip is coming to an end. I feel like I've only just scratched the surface of what Fes has to offer. I know I will leave with a newfound appreciation for Moroccan culture and a desire to return someday soon. Perhaps Greta and I can explore more of Morocco together. She would love the colors and the smells of the Medina.
As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Fes has a way of getting under your skin, of captivating your senses and stirring your soul. It's a city that I will never forget, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
This trip with friends has been quite the adventure, and I'm so glad we decided to explore Fes together. Their company has made the experience even more special, and I know we will cherish these memories for years to come.
Tonight, I'll drift off to sleep with the sounds of Fes still ringing in my ears, dreaming of the vibrant souks and serene corners that make this city so unique. Fes, you have truly captured my heart.
I must remember to buy a portable charger and sunglasses when I get back to Berlin, I really missed them here! I also need to start practicing my German idioms with Greta again, I seem to have forgotten some while being away.
Until tomorrow!
