Fes From Above & Below
Today was a day of incredible vistas and vibrant experiences here in Fes. From ancient tombs offering panoramic views to the lively atmosphere of a local club, Fes truly captivated all our senses. Join me as I recount our journey through this mesmerizing city.
Our Friday began with a hearty breakfast at Bistro Laaroussa. The rooftop setting was charming, and the mix of Mediterranean and Moroccan flavors was a delightful start to the day. Greta would have loved the view of the Merenid tombs and Mount Zalagh as we ate. I made a mental note to bring her here when we return to Fes together. The fresh ingredients and home-cooked style made me feel right at home, reminding me of the simple, delicious meals my mother used to make back in Micoud. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, savoring every bite of the warm bread, olives, and flavorful spreads.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Marinid Tombs. The tombs are located on a hill above Fes al-Bali, in the old Medina quarter. They were first built as a necropolis for the Marinid dynasty which ruled over Morocco in the 13th century. The walk up to the tombs was a bit of a climb, but the views along the way were worth it. As we ascended, the city unfolded beneath us, revealing its intricate network of rooftops and winding streets. The winter sun cast a golden glow over everything, enhancing the beauty of the scene. The tombs themselves, though mostly in ruins, held a certain mystique. It's fascinating to think that this was once a royal necropolis, a final resting place for the Marinid dynasty. Standing there, amidst the skeletal remains of the past, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
From the Marinid Tombs, we made our way to the Viewpoint Medina. The views from here were even more expansive, offering a complete panorama of the Fes el Bali, the largest medina in the world. The medina spans 540 acres. Seeing it from above before delving into its maze of streets gives a sense of perspective on how vast it is. I tried to imagine what it must have been like centuries ago, when Fes was at the height of its power, a bustling center of trade and culture. The city seemed to pulse with life, even from this distance. I spent a good while just soaking it all in, trying to capture the essence of Fes in my mind's eye.

Next on our list was Borj Sud, another vantage point offering stunning views of the city. Borj Sud is a fort in the city of Fes, Morocco. It was first established around 1582 by the Saadian dynasty. This fort, built in the 16th century by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansour, provided a different perspective, looking out over the city from the south. The architecture of the fort itself was impressive, a testament to the military engineering of the time. As I walked along the ramparts, I could almost hear the echoes of soldiers past, standing guard against potential invaders. From Borj Sud, we could see the hillsides around the tombs occupied by the Bab Guissa Cemetery.

After a morning of exploring the heights of Fes, it was time for lunch. We headed to Restaurant Tresor Fes, located in the heart of the medina. The restaurant seamlessly blends traditional Moroccan hospitality with a contemporary dining experience. The warm decor and inviting atmosphere made us feel instantly welcome. The menu was a delightful journey through Moroccan culinary traditions, featuring an array of dishes that highlight local ingredients and spices. I opted for a tagine, of course, savoring the tender meat and fragrant spices. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventures. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, eager to recommend dishes or assist with any dietary preferences.

As evening approached, we decided to experience Fes's nightlife. We ventured to Felix Club Fes, a popular nightclub known for its spacious dance floor and lively atmosphere. The club was located at Hotel Tghat. The music was pumping, the atmosphere was electric, and we danced the night away. It was a fun, carefree way to end our day, letting loose and enjoying the company of friends. The stylish clientele and great drinks added to the overall experience. I even tried my hand at some Arabic dance moves, much to the amusement of my friends.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Henna Souk, Place Rcif, and delve deeper into the Fez old medina. I'm particularly excited to visit the Henna Souk and see the traditional pottery. I am also looking forward to visiting Medin Art, a shop I heard has a lot of interesting things.
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. Fes is a city that truly engages all your senses, from the sights and sounds of the medina to the flavors of its cuisine and the warmth of its people. It's a place where history comes alive, where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern life. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
