Lost in the Azure Alleys of Chefchaouen

Today marked the beginning of our Moroccan adventure, and what better place to start than the famed blue city of Chefchaouen?
Arriving with my friends after a scenic drive from Tangier, I was immediately captivated by the surreal beauty of this place. It felt like stepping into a dream, where every building is painted in a mesmerizing shade of blue. I’ve been looking forward to this trip for months, and I’m excited to share every moment with you all.

Our first stop was the heart of the city, the Chefchaouen Medina.
I’ve heard so much about it, but nothing could have prepared me for the sensory overload that awaited. The narrow, winding streets were a labyrinth of blue, with splashes of vibrant colors from the shops and the traditional clothing of the locals. The air was filled with the aroma of spices, the sound of bartering, and the gentle murmur of daily life. It was a photographer's paradise, and I couldn't resist snapping away at every corner.
I can already tell my camera roll is going to be bursting by the end of this trip!

Chefchaouen is more than just a visual spectacle; it's an immersive experience that awakens the senses and touches the soul.
We decided to fortify ourselves with a traditional Moroccan breakfast at Cafe Clock.
The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a hearty meal. I opted for the classic Moroccan pancakes with honey and a strong, sweet mint tea. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. Apparently, Cafe Clock is known for Moroccan cuisine with vegan and gluten-free options. I made a mental note to try the vegan Pastilla next time.
As an ESL teacher, I always appreciate the chance to practice my language skills, and I even managed to pick up a few new German idioms to share with Greta back in Berlin!

After breakfast, we ventured deeper into the Medina, losing ourselves in its enchanting alleys.
We stumbled upon countless artisan shops, each one a treasure trove of handcrafted goods. From intricately carved wooden doors to handwoven carpets and vibrant blue pottery, the craftsmanship was simply astounding. I picked up a beautiful handwoven scarf for Greta, knowing she would appreciate the intricate patterns and soft texture. I was also tempted by the metal lanterns and teasets. I am thinking of getting some of those later in the trip as gifts.
The shopkeepers were friendly and welcoming, offering us mint tea and sharing stories about their craft. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the local culture and learn about the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Lunch was at Chez Hicham.
We sat on the terrace, enjoying a panoramic view of the Medina while savoring delicious Moroccan cuisine. I decided on a Moroccan chicken salad, while my friends opted for the tagine. The food was flavorful and fresh, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting.
Chez Hicham also has a hotel, Riad Hicham. The riad offers a relaxing hammam, and is close to everything, including safe parking.

In the afternoon, we made our way to the Kasbah. This historic fortress, built in the 15th century, once served as a defense against invaders. Today, it houses a museum showcasing the region's history, culture, and art. We explored the exhibits, admiring the traditional musical instruments, pottery, and weaponry on display. The Kasbah also offered stunning views of Chefchaouen. From the tower, we could see the entire city spread out before us, a sea of blue against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. It was a truly breathtaking sight.

As the sun began to set, we decided to unwind with drinks at Bar Oum Rabie.
This cozy bar is known for being one of the few places in town that serves alcohol, and it was the perfect spot to relax and reflect on our first day in Chefchaouen.
We ordered some local beers and shared stories and laughter as the sky turned a beautiful shade of orange and pink. The bar had a relaxing atmosphere and played soft music. I sampled some Moroccan tapas with my beer. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Before heading back to Hotel Casa Miguel, we did some shopping for Chefchaouen crafts.
Chefchaouen is known for blue pottery, traditional Moroccan textiles, leather goods, rugs, spices, argan oil products and metalwork. I bought some blue pottery as a souvenir.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ras El Ma, and Place El Haouta.
I’m particularly excited about visiting Ras El Ma, a natural spring and waterfall just a short walk from the Medina. I hear it’s a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and I can’t wait to soak in the peaceful atmosphere. I think I will enjoy Place El Haouta as well. I'm also looking forward to trying out some more local cuisine at Assaada for breakfast, Restaurant Al Wiam for lunch, and BILMOS for dinner.
We might also check out La Botica De La Abuela De Aladdin, and Sunset at sunset.

I must remember to buy a power adapter, and a light jacket for the cooler evenings.
I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings! Chefchaouen has already stolen a piece of my heart, and I have a feeling this is just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure. I am glad I decided to visit the blue city with my friends!
