Saint-Louis Adventures: Art, History, and Culinary Delights
Today was a fantastic blend of history, art, and, of course, delicious food here in Saint-Louis. As I continue my journey through this captivating city with my friends, I find myself more and more enchanted by its unique blend of cultures and stories. From exploring aviation history to immersing ourselves in local art, today was a feast for the senses.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Eden's Ouvert. The morning air was fresh, and the promise of a day filled with exploration made the meal even more enjoyable. I opted for a traditional Senegalese breakfast, which gave me the energy I needed for the adventures ahead. The restaurant had a charming atmosphere, and it was a great way to start the day immersed in local culture.

Our first stop was the Musée Jean Mermoz. As someone fascinated by history and aviation, this museum was a must-see. Named after the famous French aviator Jean Mermoz, the museum celebrates the pioneering days of airmail service between France and South America. Saint-Louis played a crucial role as a stop on the European to South American Aéropostale route, serving as the departure point for the challenging transatlantic flight to Brazil. It’s incredible to think that this city was once a vital link connecting continents!

The museum is housed in a beautiful old colonial building that adds to its charm. Inside, we explored exhibits featuring vintage aircraft models, original flight gear, and photographs depicting the golden age of aviation. I was particularly fascinated by the replica of the Santiago de Chile aircraft, which Mermoz famously piloted. Seeing the vintage models and reading about the daring flights of the past truly brought the history to life. I could almost hear the roar of the engines and feel the excitement of those early aviation pioneers. The museum not only paid tribute to Mermoz but also highlighted the contributions of other notable figures like Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
It's not just about seeing history; it's about feeling the echoes of the past resonate within the present.
After soaking in the aviation history, we headed to the Village des Arts de Saint-Louis. This vibrant marketplace is a hub for local craftsmen and artists, showcasing a wide array of handmade products. From intricate jewelry and colorful textiles to stunning woodwork and traditional pottery, each stall told a story of craftsmanship passed down through generations.

Walking through the village, I was struck by the incredible talent and passion of the artisans. We had the chance to speak with several of them, learning about their techniques and the inspiration behind their work. It was fascinating to see how they incorporate traditional Senegalese motifs and designs into their creations. I even picked up a beautiful hand-woven scarf as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of the vibrant culture of Saint-Louis. Greta would adore this, I thought to myself, already envisioning her wearing it back in Berlin.
The atmosphere of the Village des Arts was lively, filled with the sounds of laughter and the rhythmic beats of traditional music. It was an immersive experience that went beyond mere shopping; it was a celebration of Senegalese art and culture. The Village des Arts is more than just a place to buy souvenirs; it’s a living, breathing testament to the artistic spirit of Saint-Louis.
For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant La Galette, known for its authentic Senegalese cuisine. Despite its name suggesting French crêpes, La Galette specializes in traditional Senegalese dishes. The restaurant has a cozy, unpretentious ambiance, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed meal. I opted for the thieboudienne, a national dish of Senegal made with fish, rice, and vegetables. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the culinary heritage of the region. My friends tried the yassa crevettes (shrimp yassa), which they raved about. The service was attentive, and the prices were very reasonable, making it a delightful dining experience.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Le Spoutnik Bar. This bar is known for its live jazz performances, creating an atmosphere that resonates with the rich cultural heritage of Senegal. Sipping on a local Gazelle beer, I enjoyed the soulful sounds of the music, surrounded by both locals and tourists. The warm ambiance and friendly staff made it a perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. I have always loved jazz, and the Senegalese twist on this classic genre was truly captivating. Le Spoutnik Bar is one of the best places for tourists to relax and enjoy the soulful sounds that fill the air.

Dinner was at Chez Yaye Awa. This cozy restaurant offered a warm, inviting atmosphere and a menu full of local favorites. I decided to try the grilled fish, which was cooked to perfection and seasoned with a delightful blend of spices. The meal was simple yet satisfying, a true taste of Senegalese home cooking. The friendly service added to the charm, making it a memorable dining experience.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Saint-Louis, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city at night. The colonial architecture was even more striking under the moonlight, and the energy of the city was palpable. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.
As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the rich culture and history of Saint-Louis. From the aviation history at the Musée Jean Mermoz to the vibrant art at the Village des Arts, every moment was a testament to the unique charm of this city. And, of course, the delicious food at Eden's Ouvert, Restaurant La Galette, and Chez Yaye Awa added an extra layer of enjoyment to the day.
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Reserve Sylvo Pastorale de Doli and Les Comptoirs - Le MuPho [if day 6 is last day of trip, merge in trip end]. I’m excited to see what new adventures await us as we continue our exploration of this fascinating region. Until then, I bid you adieu from Saint-Louis!
I’m also mindful of ensuring I have all my essentials for tomorrow's adventure. I made a mental note to buy a power adapter, as I'm constantly running out of battery on my camera and phone – essential for capturing all these amazing moments. And I definitely need to find a pair of sunglasses; the Senegalese sun is quite intense!
I am so glad I decided to come to Saint-Louis with my friends. It’s so much more fun exploring a new place together, sharing experiences, and making memories that will last a lifetime. As I drift off to sleep, I can’t help but feel grateful for this incredible journey and the opportunity to connect with such a vibrant culture. I am excited for what tomorrow will bring!
