A Day of Discovery in Saint-Louis

Today was a delightful blend of nature, art, and local flavors. It’s days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the unexpected discoveries and the chance to immerse myself in a new culture. I'm excited to share my experiences from today, which was a perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

Our Sunday began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Djamila. I opted for a traditional Senegalese breakfast of Thiéboudienne, the national dish, which gave me the energy I needed for the day ahead. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect start before heading out to explore. It's always a pleasure to start the day with local flavors; it really sets the tone for the adventures to come.

Next on the agenda was a visit to the Reserve Sylvo Pastorale de Doli. This sprawling reserve promised a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle, and it certainly delivered. The drive there was scenic, offering glimpses of the Senegalese countryside. Although the reserve has lost some of its former glory, it still provides an important sanctuary for local wildlife and a glimpse into Senegal's natural heritage. I spent a few hours wandering through the park, enjoying the peace and quiet. I managed to spot several species of birds, which was a treat for this amateur photographer. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving these natural spaces, especially as they face increasing environmental pressures. I couldn't help but think how much Greta would have enjoyed this tranquil setting. She always appreciates a good nature walk.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the quietest moments.

After immersing myself in nature, it was time for a bit of culture. We headed back to Saint-Louis to visit Les Comptoirs - Le MuPho, a photography museum that came highly recommended. This museum is part of an archipelago of museums created by Amadou Diaw, a local patron of the arts, aiming to preserve and promote Saint-Louis's cultural heritage. Les Comptoirs is housed in a beautifully restored building and features a collection of contemporary and traditional Senegalese photography.

The exhibits were captivating, offering a glimpse into the lives and landscapes of Senegal through the eyes of local artists. I was particularly moved by the portraits of everyday Senegalese people; their stories etched into their faces. The museum also had a charming café where I enjoyed a refreshing bissap juice (hibiscus) while reflecting on the art I had just seen. It’s inspiring to see how much effort is being put into preserving and celebrating Senegalese culture, and I felt privileged to be a part of it, even in a small way.

Lunch was at Restaurant Le BonGout, where I sampled more local cuisine. This time, I tried the Yassa Poulet, a flavorful chicken dish marinated in lemon and onions. It was absolutely delicious, and the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant made the experience even more enjoyable. The owner was incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the history of the restaurant and his passion for Senegalese cooking. It's these personal interactions that really make a trip memorable.

In the late afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Diagne Sear Boutique. This boutique is known for its unique blend of traditional Senegalese fashion and contemporary styles. I found a beautiful boubou (a traditional Senegalese robe) made from vibrant, locally sourced fabrics. It’s the perfect souvenir to remind me of my time here, and I can't wait to wear it back in Berlin. I am sure Greta will appreciate the vibrant colors, as well.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant Afia for dinner. This restaurant is renowned for its authentic Senegalese dishes and warm hospitality. I opted for the Thieboudienne again, eager to compare it to the breakfast version. It was equally delicious, each restaurant putting its own unique spin on the classic dish. The atmosphere was lively, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the delicious food and vibrant ambiance. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a leisurely stroll along the streets of Saint-Louis, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city at night. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter, and the streets were bustling with activity. It’s moments like these that make me feel truly alive and connected to the world around me.

Reflecting on the day, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of Saint-Louis. From the tranquil Reserve de Doli to the vibrant streets and delicious cuisine, every moment was a feast for the senses. I'm also reminded that Saint-Louis has a sister city in the US with the same name. It would be interesting to see how the two compare! I am looking forward to tomorrow, which promises more exciting adventures as we plan to visit Langue de Barbarie National Park and take a tour of the egg. The thought of seeing more of Senegal's natural beauty fills me with anticipation.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. Saint-Louis has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I also need to remember to buy a power adapter tomorrow! It completely slipped my mind, and I am running low on battery.

Good night from Saint-Louis!
