Solo Cultural Exploration in Kyoto, Japan
Day 13: Kyoto's Cultural Depths: Temples, Towers, and Treasures
Exploring Kyoto's ancient temples and modern marvels, from Tō-ji Temple's history to Kyoto Tower's panoramic views, a day of cultural immersion.
A Day of Discovery in Kyoto
Today was another day of diving deep into the heart of Kyoto. From ancient temples echoing with history to modern structures offering breathtaking views, I experienced a blend of the old and new that makes this city so captivating. It's amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day here!
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha. I know, it's a mouthful, but so was the okonomiyaki! It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.
Tō-ji Temple: A Journey Through Time
My first stop was Tō-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple's history stretches back to the Heian period, and it’s one of Kyoto's oldest and most significant temples. The five-story pagoda is a true marvel, standing tall as the tallest wooden structure in Japan. I spent a good amount of time wandering through the grounds, admiring the architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The Kondo Hall and the Lecture Hall were particularly impressive, filled with ancient Buddhist statues and intricate artwork.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet corners where history whispers and serenity embraces you.
I found myself drawn to the temple's gardens, where meticulously manicured landscapes created a sense of tranquility. It was easy to imagine monks from centuries ago walking these same paths, seeking enlightenment and peace. I even took a moment to sit by the pond, watching the koi fish glide through the water, feeling a sense of calm wash over me. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding.
While I was there, I learned that Tō-ji Temple often hosts a flea market on the 21st of each month, known as Kobo-san Market. Though I missed the market, I made a mental note to visit if I'm ever in Kyoto on that day again. I love browsing through antiques and local crafts, and I've heard this market is one of the best in the city.
Lunch at Mezopotamia Kebab House: A Culinary Detour
For lunch, I decided to try something completely different and headed to Mezopotamia Kebab House. After days of traditional Japanese cuisine, a kebab sounded like the perfect change of pace. The restaurant was small and unassuming, but the food was delicious. I ordered a lamb kebab with all the fixings, and it was exactly what I needed to recharge for the afternoon.

Kyoto Tower: A Bird's-Eye View
Next on my list was Kyoto Tower, a modern landmark that stands in stark contrast to the city's ancient temples. I took the elevator to the top and was immediately greeted by panoramic views of Kyoto. From up there, I could see the sprawling cityscape, with temples and shrines dotting the landscape. It was a great way to get a sense of the city's layout and appreciate its unique blend of urban and natural elements.

I learned that there was a special event on May 1st called Nidec Day at Kyoto Tower, but unfortunately, I missed it. However, I did discover that there's a rooftop bar and BBQ area called TOWERLAND that opened on April 19th, 2025. It sounds like a great spot to enjoy a drink and some food with a view, but I decided to save that for another time.
Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street: A Shopper's Paradise
In the late afternoon, I ventured into Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, a bustling pedestrian area packed with shops and restaurants. It was a sensory overload in the best way possible, with bright lights, colorful displays, and the aroma of street food filling the air. I browsed through the various shops, from traditional craft stores to trendy boutiques, and picked up a few souvenirs for Greta and myself.

I stumbled upon Bentendo, a shop that has been around since the Meiji era. They offer Kyoto-themed souvenirs, many of which are designed and made by the shop itself. I was particularly impressed by their Imabari towels, known for their softness. I ended up buying a few as gifts for my friends back in Berlin.
As I walked along the street, I couldn't help but notice the mix of locals and tourists, all enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. It was a great place to people-watch and soak in the energy of the city. I even tried a few street snacks, including some delicious mochi and takoyaki.
Dinner at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION: A Culinary Highlight
For dinner, I decided to splurge and treat myself to a meal at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. I had heard so much about Kobe beef, and I wanted to experience it for myself. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a calm and inviting atmosphere. I ordered a steak cooked medium-rare, and it was absolutely divine. The beef was tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was definitely one of the culinary highlights of my trip.

As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the ancient temples to the modern tower, from the bustling shopping street to the elegant restaurant, Kyoto had once again surprised and delighted me. It's a city that constantly reveals new layers, offering something for everyone.
Before heading back to the hotel, I took a leisurely stroll along the Kamo River, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The city was quiet and peaceful, with only the sound of the river flowing gently by. I thought about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to the Kyoto Railway Museum and a sushi-making class. I'm particularly excited about the sushi-making class, as I've always wanted to learn how to make sushi properly. I'm also planning to check out Rocking Bar ING in the evening, a local bar that I heard has great music and a lively atmosphere.
As I walked, I thought of Greta back in Berlin. I miss her terribly and wish she could be here to experience all of this with me. I know she would love the temples and gardens, and she would definitely appreciate the delicious food. I can't wait to share my photos and stories with her when I get back.
