A Taste of Kyoto and Tranquility

Today was a sensory explosion, a dive into the heart of Kyoto's culinary scene, and a peaceful reflection amidst ancient beauty. It’s amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you’re fueled by curiosity and the desire to experience everything a place has to offer. Mateo was especially excited about today, and Klara and I were just as eager to explore.

Our day began with a burst of flavor at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. I've always believed that a good breakfast sets the tone for the entire day, and this meal did not disappoint. The tender Kobe beef was an exquisite start, melting in my mouth with a richness that only the finest Wagyu can offer. Mateo, surprisingly, was quite the fan, polishing off his portion with gusto. Klara, ever the thoughtful one, savored each bite, appreciating the artistry and quality of the ingredients. It's moments like these, sharing exceptional food with my family, that make traveling so worthwhile.

The best journeys are those that awaken your senses and leave you with a deeper appreciation for the world around you.

After breakfast, we plunged headfirst into the vibrant chaos of Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto's Kitchen. The market was a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. Vendors hawked their wares, offering everything from fresh seafood and pickles to exotic fruits and traditional sweets. Mateo was fascinated by the octopus lollipops, though he ultimately decided to stick with a more conventional strawberry mochi. I was in heaven, sampling various delicacies and soaking in the lively atmosphere. Klara, with her keen eye for detail, captured some stunning photos of the market's colorful displays. We picked up some yuba (tofu skin) for a future dinner, a true Kyoto delicacy.

Navigating the narrow lanes of Nishiki Market was an adventure in itself. The crowds were thick, but the energy was infectious. We sampled everything from pickled vegetables to fresh seafood, each bite a new and exciting experience. Mateo was particularly fond of the takoyaki (octopus balls), while Klara was captivated by the intricate displays of Japanese sweets. I found myself drawn to the various spice vendors, stocking up on unique blends to bring back home to Potsdam.

Leaving the bustling market behind, we sought solace at Kodaiji Temple. This Zen temple, founded in 1606 by Hideyoshi's widow, Nene, offered a welcome respite from the city's frenetic energy. The temple's gardens were a masterpiece of landscape design, with meticulously raked gravel, serene ponds, and ancient trees. We wandered through the bamboo grove, its towering stalks creating a cathedral-like atmosphere of tranquility. Mateo, surprisingly, was captivated by the Zen garden, spending a good amount of time carefully arranging pebbles. I found myself lost in contemplation, reflecting on the temple's history and the impermanence of life.

The temple itself was stunning, with its elegant architecture and intricate details. We explored the various halls and pavilions, each offering a unique perspective on Japanese art and culture. Mateo was particularly fascinated by the temple's dragon paintings, while Klara was drawn to the delicate tea room, imagining the ceremonies that must have taken place there over the centuries.

As the afternoon wore on, we ventured into the Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This covered arcade was a shopper's paradise, with a mix of traditional crafts, trendy fashion, and quirky souvenirs. Mateo was on the hunt for Pokemon merchandise, while Klara was interested in finding some authentic Kyoto textiles. I was content to simply wander, soaking in the atmosphere and people-watching.

We found a charming little shop selling handmade paper crafts, where Mateo picked out a colorful origami set. Klara discovered a beautiful silk scarf, dyed with traditional Kyoto patterns. I couldn't resist buying a set of handcrafted chopsticks, a perfect reminder of our culinary adventures in the city. The shopping street was also a great place to sample local street food. We tried everything from matcha ice cream to savory dumplings, each bite a delicious treat.

For lunch, we indulged in the culinary artistry of Oryori Menami. This restaurant, known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine, offered a delightful array of seasonal dishes. The obanzai, small, delicately prepared plates, were a highlight, showcasing the region's fresh produce and culinary techniques. Mateo enjoyed the tamagoyaki (rolled omelet), while Klara savored the delicate flavors of the simmered vegetables. I was particularly impressed by the presentation of each dish, a testament to the Japanese attention to detail and appreciation for aesthetics.

After a satisfying lunch, we continued our exploration of Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, immersing ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the area. The street was a fascinating blend of traditional shops and modern boutiques, offering a wide variety of goods from local crafts to trendy fashion. Mateo was thrilled to discover a store dedicated to anime and manga, while Klara enjoyed browsing the selection of traditional textiles and ceramics. I found myself drawn to the various tea shops, sampling different blends and learning about the art of tea ceremony.

As evening approached, we ascended to the French Dining Top of Kyoto for dinner. Located atop the Rihga Royal Hotel, this revolving restaurant offered breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The French cuisine was exquisite, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. Mateo, surprisingly, enjoyed the escargots, while Klara raved about the delicate seafood dishes. I savored the rich flavors of the beef bourguignon, a perfect complement to the stunning cityscape.

The revolving aspect of the restaurant added an extra layer of enchantment to the dining experience. As we savored each course, the city slowly rotated around us, revealing new and captivating perspectives. Mateo was mesmerized by the changing scenery, while Klara captured some stunning photos of the illuminated temples and gardens below. I felt a sense of awe and gratitude, appreciating the beauty and history that surrounded us.

The Musha Shinji at Kamigamo Shrine was also taking place today. The Musha Shinji is a traditional ritual held annually on January 16th at Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto City. It's a ceremony of shooting arrows to ward off evil and pray for a good harvest, offering a valuable opportunity to experience martial arts culture. I wish we had the time to go, but maybe next time.

As we made our way back to Hotel Grand Bach Select Kyoto, we reflected on the day's adventures. We had tasted the flavors of Kyoto, found serenity in ancient temples, and immersed ourselves in the city's vibrant culture. It was a day filled with unforgettable experiences, a testament to the magic of travel and the joy of sharing it with my family. Tomorrow, we're planning to venture a bit further out, to Byodoin and Uji. I'm particularly excited to see Byodoin's Phoenix Hall, and Klara is looking forward to exploring Uji, famous for its green tea. And perhaps, if Mateo is up for it, we'll try a bit of sake at the Kyoto Star Bar in the evening.

We may have forgotten the travel adapter and raincoat, but we remembered to pack our curiosity and enthusiasm, and that's what truly matters. And who knows what adventures tomorrow will bring? Until then, *adiós* from Kyoto!

I'm so glad we chose Kyoto as our destination. The blend of culture, history, and natural beauty is truly captivating. And sharing it all with Klara and Mateo makes it even more special. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to connect with the world around me. As I drift off to sleep, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, eager to discover what new wonders await us in this enchanting city. I can't wait to share those experiences with all of you.

The city is truly a gem, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to experience it with my loved ones. It's moments like these that make life so rich and fulfilling, and I'm determined to savor every second of it. And who knows what other surprises Kyoto has in store for us? Only time will tell, but I have a feeling that our adventure is just beginning. Good night from Kyoto!

Before I close out this entry, I'd like to share a thought that's been on my mind throughout the day. As travelers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of the impact we have on the places we visit. It's important to support local businesses, respect cultural traditions, and minimize our environmental footprint. By traveling responsibly, we can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of places like Kyoto. It's a small gesture, but it can make a big difference in the long run. And now, with that thought in mind, I bid you *buenas noches* from Kyoto. May your dreams be filled with adventure and inspiration.

As I reflect on today's journey, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing the unexpected. Sometimes, the best moments are the ones that aren't planned, the spontaneous encounters and serendipitous discoveries that make travel so exciting. Whether it's stumbling upon a hidden temple or striking up a conversation with a local artisan, it's these unexpected moments that often leave the most lasting impressions. So, my advice to fellow travelers is to be open to the unknown, to embrace the detours, and to allow yourself to be surprised by the magic of the world around you. You never know what treasures you might find along the way.
