Echoes of History in Fes

Today was a deep dive into the soul of Fes, a city that hums with centuries of stories etched into its walls and whispered in its alleyways. It’s a place where every corner turned reveals another layer of history, a testament to the diverse cultures that have shaped Morocco. Today, my friends and I ventured into the heart of Fes, ready to absorb its spiritual and historical essence.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Ouliya. Fuelled up with traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, we set out to explore the Aben Danan Synagogue. Tucked away in the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, the synagogue was a serene escape from the bustling streets. It’s easy to miss from the outside, blending seamlessly with the surrounding houses, but stepping inside is like entering another world.

The Aben Danan Synagogue, dating back to the 17th century, stands as a testament to the Jewish community that once thrived in Fes. The synagogue was built by Mimoun Ben Sidan, a rich merchant from the town of Aït Ishaq in Khénifra. The architecture is both simple and elegant, with blue figured Moroccan tiles lining the walls and a beautifully carved wooden Torah Ark. The light filters in through small windows high in the walls, creating a peaceful atmosphere. I found myself reflecting on the stories of the families who had prayed within these walls, their hopes and dreams echoing through the centuries.

Visiting the Aben Danan Synagogue felt like stepping back in time, connecting with a community that has left an indelible mark on the cultural tapestry of Fes.

Leaving the synagogue, we made our way to the Borj Nord Museum, a stark contrast to the intimate setting of the synagogue. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the Borj Nord is a fortress built in the 16th century. Originally constructed to monitor the population of Fes, it now houses a fascinating collection of arms from various periods. As a restoration technician, I was particularly interested in the building itself. The architecture reflects a blend of European and Moroccan influences, a testament to the country's complex history.

Inside the museum, we wandered through halls filled with swords, guns, and armor. The collection spans from the Stone Age to the 20th century, offering a comprehensive overview of the evolution of weaponry. I was particularly impressed by the Moroccan arms, crafted in the Makina factory in Fes during the 19th century. Seeing these weapons up close gave me a sense of the craftsmanship and skill involved in their creation. I could almost hear the clang of the blacksmith’s hammer and the shouts of soldiers on the battlefield.

After immersing ourselves in military history, we decided to grab lunch. We stopped at Restaurant Palais Lahlou, where we enjoyed traditional Moroccan cuisine in a beautiful setting. The tagine was flavorful, and the company was even better. My friends and I shared stories and laughs, soaking in the atmosphere of Fes.

With our bellies full, we ventured to the Marinid Tombs, another hilltop site offering panoramic views of Fes. These tombs, dating back to the 14th century, are the final resting place of members of the Marinid dynasty. Though the tombs themselves are largely in ruins, the location is breathtaking.

As we stood there, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city. The view was simply stunning. From our vantage point, we could see the sprawling medina, the minarets of the mosques, and the rolling hills in the distance. It was a moment of perfect serenity, a chance to appreciate the beauty and history of Fes from a unique perspective. It was easy to imagine the city as it once was, a bustling center of trade and culture, the heart of Morocco.

“The beauty of ruins is that they remind us of what was, and what could be again.”

Before heading for dinner, we squeezed in some time for shopping at Les Articles du Rif. I was on the hunt for a special memento to bring back home to Sophie and Mateo. I finally settled on a beautifully crafted Berber rug, its intricate patterns telling a story of the region’s rich cultural heritage. I knew Sophie would appreciate its artistry, and Mateo would love playing on it.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at La Maison Bleue for dinner. The restaurant, housed in a traditional riad, was a feast for the senses. The décor was exquisite, with intricate tile work and lush gardens. The food was equally impressive, a delicious blend of Moroccan flavors and French techniques.

Finally, we decided to experience some of Fes's nightlife. We headed to the British Saloon for a nightcap. This bar, once the British consulate, has a unique atmosphere, blending Western and Moroccan styles. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. Over a glass of local wine, we shared our favorite moments, laughing and reminiscing about the sights and sounds of Fes. The bar has a live band playing on some nights, while other nights are dedicated to karaoke.

Today was a day of contrasts, from the solemnity of the synagogue to the grandeur of the fortress and the tranquility of the tombs. Fes has a way of captivating you, drawing you into its stories and leaving you with a sense of wonder. I am so glad I got to experience the city with my friends. As I prepare for tomorrow, I am filled with anticipation for what new discoveries await. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Fez El Jdid, visit the Royal Palace, and wander through the Henna Souk.
