A Royal Day in Fes

Today was a splendid immersion into the heart of Fes Jdid, the 'New Fes,' which, as I learned, isn't really that new, dating back to the 13th century. The experiences were a vibrant mix of history, architecture, and the everyday hustle of Moroccan life. I was especially excited to explore this part of Fes with my friends, sharing in the discoveries and creating memories that I know we'll cherish for years to come. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to step outside my familiar world in Montreal and dive headfirst into a culture so different from my own.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Peroke Cafe Restaurant. It was a delightful way to start the day, with a blend of Moroccan and Italian flavors that catered to everyone's tastes. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, while some of my friends enjoyed Italian pastries. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and it set a positive tone for the adventures ahead.

Fueled up, we ventured into Fes El Jdid. Founded in 1276 by the Marinid dynasty, it served as the kingdom's capital and a royal citadel. Walking through its streets felt like stepping back in time, a sensation I often get when exploring historical sites. As a restoration technician, I found myself particularly drawn to the architectural details, the way the buildings have been preserved, and the stories they tell.

Exploring Fes Jdid is like flipping through the pages of a history book, each building a chapter, each street a paragraph, narrating tales of sultans, artisans, and everyday life.

Our first major stop was the Royal Palace in Fez. Although we couldn't enter, the exterior was breathtaking. The massive bronze doors, adorned with intricate geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy, were a sight to behold. I could only imagine what treasures lay within. The palace, also known as Dar el-Makhzen, is a symbol of Moroccan royalty and has been expanded and renovated over centuries. It's not just a building; it’s a living testament to Morocco's monarchical traditions and political history.

From the palace, we navigated our way to the Henna Souk and pottery. This bustling marketplace is a sensory overload in the best way possible. The air was thick with the aroma of spices, and the stalls were overflowing with colorful ceramics, leather goods, and, of course, henna. My friends were eager to try their hand at bargaining, a skill that's essential in these parts. I watched, amused, as they haggled over prices, their laughter echoing through the narrow streets. The Henna Souk is not just a place to buy things; it's an experience, a chance to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Fes.

We paused for lunch at Eden at Palais Amani, a restaurant that promised a gastronomic experience. The setting was stunning, a tranquil courtyard garden where we could relax and savor the flavors of Morocco. The menu was a blend of traditional and modern dishes, and we opted for a selection of tagines and salads to share. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect for a leisurely afternoon meal.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of the Henna Souk, eventually stumbling upon a pottery section. As someone who appreciates craftsmanship, I was captivated by the intricate designs and the skill of the artisans. I even considered buying a few pieces to bring back home, but I was worried about them surviving the journey back to Montreal. Perhaps I'll have to find a way to ship them.

Before dinner, we made a stop at the Cooperative artisanal de fes. I'm always keen to support local artisans, and this cooperative offered a wide array of handcrafted goods at fixed prices. It's a great place to find authentic souvenirs without the pressure of haggling. I picked up a few small gifts for Sophie and Mateo, knowing they would appreciate the intricate details and the cultural significance of each item. The Anou Cooperative is an artisan-owned collective that allows shoppers to buy directly from the weavers.

As the sun began to set, we headed to Les Mystères de Dar Tajine for dinner. This restaurant promised a traditional Moroccan dining experience, and it did not disappoint. The decor was opulent, and the atmosphere was enchanting. We feasted on a variety of tajines, each one bursting with flavor and spices. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Empire bar. While it was a quiet night, the ambiance was relaxed, and it was a great spot to unwind after a long day of walking. I enjoyed a mint tea while some of my friends sampled local beers. We shared stories and laughed, reminiscing about the day's adventures and planning our itinerary for tomorrow.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Cherratine Medersa, Place Rcif, and the Mosque and University Kairaouine. I'm particularly excited about the Mosque and University Kairaouine, as it's one of the oldest universities in the world. I look forward to delving deeper into the history and culture of Fes, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my friends.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the importance of cultural preservation. As a restoration technician, I see firsthand the value of preserving historical sites and sharing their stories with future generations. Fes is a city that's rich in history and culture, and it's a privilege to be able to explore its hidden corners and learn about its traditions. Traveling with friends makes this experience even more meaningful, as we share in the discoveries and create lasting memories together.

The September weather was quite pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the city. The warm days and cool evenings were a welcome change from the sometimes unpredictable weather in Montreal. It’s these small details that often make a trip memorable, the perfect weather, the right company, and the sense of adventure that comes with exploring a new place. Tonight, I'll rest well, dreaming of the architectural wonders and the vibrant souks, eager for what tomorrow will bring.
