A Day of Discovery in the High Atlas
Today was a day of immersing myself in the heart of Berber culture and the stunning landscapes surrounding Imlil. After two days of settling in, I was eager to explore the local trails, taste the regional cuisine, and learn about the traditional crafts that make this area so unique. I woke up with a sense of anticipation, ready to embrace whatever adventures the day would bring.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Happy Family House. The name certainly lived up to its promise; the atmosphere was warm and inviting, filled with the chatter of locals and fellow travelers. I ordered a traditional Moroccan breakfast of bread, honey, and mint tea. The tea, sweet and fragrant, was the perfect start to a day of hiking. Sipping it slowly, I felt grateful for the simple pleasure and the energy it provided for the adventures ahead.
Fueled and ready, I set off for my first adventure: a hike on the Boucle autour Imlil. The trail promised stunning views of the High Atlas Mountains, and it did not disappoint. The July sun was already warming the air as I started my ascent, but the clear skies offered incredible visibility. The landscape was a mix of rocky paths, lush green valleys, and terraced fields where locals were tending to their crops. I took my time, stopping frequently to take photos and soak in the scenery. I even managed to capture a few time-lapses, something I know Greta would appreciate when I get back.

The hike itself was moderately challenging, with some steep inclines and uneven terrain. I was glad I'd packed my hiking boots, even if I did forget that portable charger back in Berlin. It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to the altitude, though. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the urban atmosphere of Berlin. Along the way, I passed through small Berber villages, each with its own unique charm. The houses, built from mud and stone, blended seamlessly into the landscape, a testament to the resourcefulness and harmony of the local people.
The beauty of Imlil lies not only in its landscapes but also in the warmth and resilience of its people.
As I continued my hike, I made my way towards the Imlil waterfalls. The sound of rushing water grew louder as I approached, and soon I was standing before a cascade of cool, clear water tumbling down the rocks. It was a refreshing sight, and I took a moment to rest and enjoy the natural beauty. I even splashed some water on my face, a welcome respite from the heat. Apparently, the hike to the waterfalls is the simplest and easiest trek from Imlil, which made it a perfect midday activity.

For lunch, I stopped at Auberge Atlas Tichka, a charming guesthouse and restaurant with stunning views of the mountains. I decided to try a traditional tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables, flavored with aromatic spices. The tagine was served in a traditional earthenware pot, and the flavors were rich and complex. It was the perfect fuel for the rest of my hike. As I ate, I chatted with some fellow travelers, swapping stories and tips about the best places to explore in the area. It’s moments like these that make solo travel so rewarding – the chance to connect with people from all walks of life and share experiences.

After lunch, I made my way back towards Imlil, taking a slightly different route to explore more of the surrounding area. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the valleys, creating a dramatic and beautiful effect. As I walked, I reflected on the simplicity and beauty of life in the High Atlas Mountains. The people here live in close connection with nature, relying on the land for their sustenance and livelihood. It’s a far cry from the hustle and bustle of modern city life, but there’s a certain peace and contentment that’s hard to find elsewhere.
My final stop for the day was the Moroccan carpets cooperative in Imlil. I had heard about this place from several locals, and I was eager to see the traditional crafts that are made here. The cooperative is a community-based organization that supports local weavers, providing them with a platform to sell their products and preserve their cultural heritage. As I entered the cooperative, I was greeted by a riot of colors and textures. The walls were lined with carpets of all shapes and sizes, each one a unique work of art. I learned that Berber rugs often tell stories or have strong narrative symbolism, which I found especially fascinating. I spent hours wandering through the displays, admiring the intricate designs and learning about the different weaving techniques. I was particularly drawn to the Berber rugs, which exhibit a unique blend of patterns and colors reflective of the local landscape and culture. The cooperative is dedicated to supporting local weavers, ensuring that my purchase would contribute to the sustainability of traditional crafts within the community. I even considered taking part in a workshop offered by the cooperative, where I could try my hand at weaving and gain a deeper appreciation for this intricate art form. I ended up purchasing a small rug with a striking geometric pattern, a reminder of my time in Imlil and a piece of Berber culture to bring back home to Berlin. I can already imagine it in our living room, perhaps a reminder of this adventure for Leila, too, as she grows up.

For dinner, I decided to try Git Le Toubkal, a restaurant recommended by my guesthouse owner. It was a bit outside the main village, but the walk was well worth it. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains. I ordered a traditional Berber dish of couscous with vegetables and lamb, and it was absolutely delicious. The couscous was light and fluffy, and the vegetables were fresh and flavorful. As I ate, I watched the sun set over the mountains, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I had today. I had hiked through stunning landscapes, tasted delicious food, and learned about the rich culture of the Berber people. It was a day of discovery, connection, and inspiration. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Lac Ifni. I've heard it's a bit of a trek to get there, but I'm sure the views will be worth it. Perhaps I'll stop by Dar Imlil in the evening, unwind and sample some local drinks. I think I deserve it after all this hiking!
As I settle in for the night, I realize that Imlil is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that touches the heart and soul. It’s a place where you can slow down, connect with nature, and appreciate the simple things in life. And as I drift off to sleep, I can’t help but smile, knowing that I’m one step closer to understanding and appreciating the beauty of Morocco and its people.
