Exploring the Majestic Fish River Canyon with Family
Day 12: Conquering Hell's Corner and Finding Serenity at Vasbyt Bend
An immersive journey through Fish River Canyon, exploring Hell's Corner, Vasbyt Bend, and savoring local flavors with family.
A Day of Breathtaking Vistas and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of embracing the grandeur of the Fish River Canyon and savoring the unique flavors of Namibia. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and delightful culinary experiences, shared with my beloved family. As we continue our journey, reconnecting with our roots and creating lasting memories, each moment feels like a precious gift.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Canyon Village, Gondwana Collection Namibia. I always appreciate a good buffet, and this one did not disappoint, offering a variety of fresh fruits, cereals, and cold meats. David enjoyed a cooked breakfast, while Aina and I opted for a lighter fare. Fuelled up and ready for the day, we set off to explore the iconic viewpoints of the Fish River Canyon.
Our first stop was Hell's Corner. The viewpoint offered a panoramic vista of the canyon's dramatic landscape. The sharp river bend below was a sight to behold, a testament to the relentless forces of nature that have sculpted this magnificent canyon over millions of years. The sheer scale of the canyon is simply breathtaking; it is considered the largest canyon in Africa. We spent a good hour there, taking photos and simply soaking in the view.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are the ones that remind you of the immense power and beauty of nature.
Next on our itinerary was Vasbyt Bend. The drive there was an adventure in itself, traversing the rugged terrain of southern Namibia. Vasbyt Bend, I learned, translates to 'hang in there' or 'persevere' in Afrikaans, a fitting name considering the challenging yet rewarding trails in the area. We opted for a shorter hike, mindful of the midday sun, but the views were no less spectacular. The vast expanse of the canyon unfolded before us, an endless tapestry of rock and sky. I could only imagine what the 85km Fish River Canyon Trail would be like. Perhaps another time, when I'm feeling particularly fit!

By lunchtime, our stomachs were rumbling, and we were eager to sample some local cuisine. We drove to Naute Kristall Cellar and Distillery, a welcome oasis in the arid landscape. This family-run distillery produces a range of handcrafted spirits, from their award-winning Devil's Claw NamGin to their unique Namibian Grappa. I decided to sample their Devil's Claw NamGin, while David opted for the Namibian Grappa. Aina, ever the designated driver, stuck to pomegranate juice. The light lunch was a delightful affair, featuring local cheeses, biltong, and homemade bread. It was a true taste of Namibia, and I savored every bite.

“The Naute Kristall Cellar and Distillery is situated on the C12, about 40km from Keetmanshoop”. We learned that the family also makes a date-chocolate cake, using dates grown on their plantation. I made a mental note to try it next time!
In the late afternoon, we decided to visit Canyon Roadhouse, Gondwana Collection Namibia, for a drink. This quirky establishment is known for its unique décor, featuring vintage cars and transport paraphernalia. The bar, aptly named 'Pompstasie' (filling station), was a sight to behold. David enjoyed a local beer, while Aina and I shared a refreshing Amarula cheesecake, a Roadhouse specialty. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, and we chatted with fellow travelers, sharing stories of our adventures in Namibia. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Canyon Lodge, Gondwana Collection Namibia, for dinner. The lodge is nestled among granite boulders, creating a tranquil and enchanting setting. The restaurant offered a delectable menu of Namibian and international cuisine. I opted for a traditional Namibian stew, while David chose a grilled steak. Aina, being a vegetarian, enjoyed a flavorful vegetable curry. The meal was a fitting end to a day of culinary delights.

After dinner, we sat outside for a while, gazing at the stars. The night sky in Namibia is something else, a vast expanse of twinkling lights that stretches as far as the eye can see. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Four Finger Rock and Hobas Campsite. Four Finger Rock is known for its unique rock formations, while Hobas Campsite is the gateway to the Fish River Canyon hiking trail. We are also planning to have breakfast at Fish River Canyon Viewpoint, lunch at Fish River Canyon, and dinner at Epata restaurant and accommodation. I am also hoping to stop by Aussenkehr Spar, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Namibia is a land of breathtaking beauty and rich cultural heritage, and I am so proud to be able to reconnect with my roots and create lasting memories with David and Aina.
The Fish River Canyon has a way of making you feel small, yet connected, to something much larger than yourself. It is a place where you can lose yourself in the vastness of the landscape and find yourself in the quiet moments of reflection. It is a place that will stay with me long after we have left, a reminder of the power and beauty of nature, and the importance of family and connection.
