Discovering Kochi's Hidden Gems: Caves, Lakes, and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of exploring the natural beauty of Kochi Prefecture, a journey that took us from the depths of a fern-filled cave to the serene shores of a mountain lake. It’s amazing how much diversity this island holds, and I’m so excited to share our adventures with you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone. Hans and I shared stories about our childhoods as we enjoyed the delicious food. As always, I found myself missing Anse Boileau, especially during moments like these, where good food and company reminded me of home. The warm, inviting atmosphere and authentic dishes were the perfect start to our day. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such genuine Japanese hospitality.
Journey into the Earth: Ioki Cave
After breakfast, we set off to explore Ioki Cave. This natural monument is just a short drive from the main highway, but stepping inside feels like entering another world. The entrance to the cave is unassuming, but once you venture in, you're surrounded by lush greenery and a primeval atmosphere.
Explore the enchanting Ioki Cave in Kochi, Japan, where nature's beauty and geological wonders come together to create an unforgettable experience.
The cave itself was carved by ocean waves millions of years ago, and the walls are embedded with fossilized shellfish. It’s incredible to think about the underwater origins of this place! As we walked deeper, we were surrounded by over 40 different varieties of ferns, a rare phenomenon that has earned Ioki Cave its recognition as a National Natural Monument. The air was cool and damp, a welcome escape from the summer heat.
The trail through the cave is mostly untouched and unpaved, which made the hike feel like a true adventure. We had to watch our step, but it was worth it to experience the raw, natural beauty of the cave. The path follows a small stream that leads to three small waterfalls. The largest waterfall is at the end of the route, cascading into an emerald-hued pool. It was a truly rewarding sight after our trek.
Sometimes, the most unexpected places reveal the most extraordinary beauty.
Ioki Cave was more than just a hike; it was an immersive experience that transported us back in time. The combination of geological wonders and vibrant plant life made it a truly unique and unforgettable stop.
Lakeside Tranquility: Lake Sameura
Next on our itinerary was Lake Sameura, a serene escape nestled in the Tosa District of Kochi. This picturesque lake is encircled by lush greenery and gentle hills, offering a tranquil environment perfect for unwinding. As we arrived, the serene waters reflected the surrounding landscapes, creating a stunning backdrop.

Lake Sameura is the largest reservoir in Shikoku, created by the Sameura Dam on the Yoshino River. The dam is essential for flood control, irrigation, and providing tap water to the surrounding areas. It also generates electricity using hydropower, contributing to the region's sustainability.
We took a leisurely stroll along the water's edge, soaking in the calming atmosphere and breathing in the fresh air. Birdwatchers would be in paradise here, with a variety of local wildlife to spot. The lake offers opportunities for various outdoor activities. Although we didn't have time for it today, you can enjoy a peaceful picnic by the lakeside or engage in light hiking on the nearby trails.
The scenery was breathtaking, and it was easy to see why Lake Sameura is considered a hidden gem. The tranquil waters and surrounding hills provided a perfect setting for reflection and relaxation. It was a welcome contrast to the bustling city life, and I felt a deep sense of peace as we took in the beauty of our surroundings.
A Taste of Local Flavors
For lunch, we visited Osusowake Shokudo Mado in Kami. This charming spot is known for its authentic Japanese flavors and commitment to using fresh, local ingredients. The word Osusowake means to share something with others, and this cafeteria embodies that spirit. The owner, Ms. Chimi Suyama, has created a space where people can connect, share a meal, and support one another.

The menu changes daily, depending on what vegetables Ms. Suyama receives from local farmers. We enjoyed a delicious meal featuring seasonal vegetables, rice bowls, and expertly prepared fish. The flavors were simple, wholesome, and incredibly satisfying.
In the evening, we headed to Amekaze Shokudo for dinner. Located in Nankoku, this restaurant offers stunning views of the surrounding rice fields. The ambiance was welcoming and serene, making it an ideal spot to unwind after our day of exploration. We savored traditional dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. The gentle rustle of rice plants created a soothing backdrop as we enjoyed our meal.

Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, we’re off to explore more of Kochi’s cultural side. We plan to visit the Kami City Takashi Yanase Memorial Hall & Anpanman Museum, and the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore. I’m particularly excited about the Anpanman Museum, as it seems like a fun and whimsical place to visit. We’ll also be trying out Dining Room Hibari for breakfast, Restaurant&Cafe Riina for lunch, and Tataki Kobo for dinner. To end the day, we might do some shopping at the Suehiro Shopping Center.
Today was a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion. From the depths of Ioki Cave to the tranquil shores of Lake Sameura, and the delicious flavors of local cuisine, Kochi Prefecture has captured my heart. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Until next time, keep exploring and cherishing the beauty around you. The world is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered, just like the ones we found today in Kochi.
