Island Views and Evening Brews
Today was a day of stunning vistas and delicious food, a true feast for the senses here on Shikoku Island. Hans and I set out early, eager to explore more of what this beautiful island has to offer. From panoramic views of the Kurushima Strait to the vibrant flavors of Takamatsu, today was a perfect blend of natural beauty and local culture. It’s days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share these incredible experiences with all of you!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Inonakanokawazu. Fuelled up, we headed towards our first destination: the Kurushima Strait Observatory. The drive itself was lovely, winding through the island's lush landscapes. As we approached the observatory, anticipation grew. I'd read so much about the Kurushima Strait, famous for its rapid currents and the impressive bridges that span across it.
The Kurushima Strait Observatory offered a breathtaking panoramic view. From our vantage point, we could see the intricate waterways, the lush islands dotting the sea, and the iconic Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge. The sheer scale of the bridge was awe-inspiring, and the way it connected the islands was a testament to human ingenuity. I couldn't resist snapping dozens of photos, trying to capture the beauty of the scene. Hans, ever the patient one, helped me find the best angles and even took a few of me posing with the stunning backdrop. It’s moments like these that I cherish, sharing the wonder of new places with my best friend.

After soaking in the views at the observatory, we made our way to Aji Ryuozan Park. This park is known for its blend of natural beauty and art installations. As we wandered through the park, we discovered various sculptures that seemed to blend seamlessly with the landscape of Seto. The park's concept of integrating art with nature was truly inspiring, and it made our walk even more enjoyable. We even found an observation deck that was itself a work of art, a piece exhibited in the Setouchi Triennale. The views from this deck were different from those at the Kurushima Strait Observatory, offering a unique perspective on the surrounding area.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
Lunchtime found us at Tosa Rokkon, a restaurant that Hans had been particularly eager to try. He'd heard rave reviews about their authentic Japanese cuisine and the way they highlight local ingredients. The restaurant did not disappoint. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, guiding us through the menu and offering recommendations. We started with some sushi and sashimi, both incredibly fresh and flavorful. For our main courses, Hans opted for a regional specialty, while I chose a beautifully prepared seasonal dish. Every bite was a delight, a testament to the chef's skill and dedication to using the best local produce. It was a truly memorable meal, one that we'll be talking about for years to come.

As the day wound down, we found ourselves at Okamura for dinner. This izakaya in Takamatsu City is known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious food. The owner, originally from Fukui Prefecture, offers local delicacies such as Echizen crab, along with a wide selection of sake. The homely atmosphere made it easy to relax and enjoy the high-quality dishes. The crab dishes are especially popular in winter, but even in August, the food was outstanding. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and culinary delights.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Bar Kohno. I was in the mood for something light and refreshing, and Hans, as always, was happy to indulge my whims. Bar Kohno is a cozy and welcoming spot that has been serving visitors for years. They offer a selection of about 1,000 different whiskies and popular cocktails made with local Tokushima citrus and fruit. The bartender was a real master, creating the perfect cocktail for me based on my preferences. It was the perfect way to relax and reflect on the day's adventures.

Reflecting on today, I am struck by the diversity of experiences Shikoku Island has offered us. From the grand vistas of the Kurushima Strait to the intimate flavors of local izakayas, every moment has been a discovery. It reminds me of why I love to travel, to experience new cultures and see the world from different perspectives. And to share it all with Hans, of course!
Tomorrow, we are off to explore Ioki Cave and Lake Sameura. Ioki Cave is supposed to be quite the adventure, and I’m looking forward to seeing what hidden wonders it holds. Lake Sameura, with its serene beauty, promises a tranquil escape. I can’t wait to share those experiences with you all as well. Until then, goodnight from Takamatsu!
I’m starting to feel a bit homesick for Anse Boileau, but Hans always knows how to cheer me up. Perhaps I’ll try to recreate some Creole dishes when we get back to Bonn. It’s a small way to bring a piece of home with me, wherever I go.
