Day 4: Stepping Back in Time and Diving into Art: A Day of Cultural Immersion in Takamatsu
Explore Shikoku's heritage at Shikoku Village and immerse yourself in world-renowned art at the Otsuka Museum of Art in Takamatsu.
A Journey Through Time and Art
Today was a day dedicated to soaking in the cultural richness of Takamatsu. We started with a step back in time at Shikoku Village, followed by an immersive experience at the Otsuka Museum of Art. It was a day of contrasts, from the rustic charm of traditional architecture to the grandeur of replicated masterpieces, and I couldn't wait to share every detail with you all.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Osusowake Shokudo Mado. The name 'Osusowake' means to share something with others, which perfectly encapsulates the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant. It felt like a true taste of Japanese hospitality. The menu changes daily depending on the fresh vegetables the owner gets from local farmers. I had a comforting and fulfilling teishoku meal, complete with rice and miso soup.

Shikoku Village: A Glimpse into the Past
After breakfast, we made our way to Shikoku Village. This open-air museum is a collection of relocated and preserved traditional houses and buildings from all over Shikoku, dating back to the Edo and Meiji periods. As someone who grew up surrounded by the traditional Creole architecture of the Seychelles, I always find myself drawn to places that celebrate and preserve historical buildings. Walking through the village felt like stepping back in time, each structure telling a story of the past.
The village is meticulously reconstructed, showcasing the unique customs and crafts of the region. Hans was particularly fascinated by the traditional pottery and weaving exhibits. We wandered through the tranquil gardens, admiring the beautiful landscapes that complemented the historical buildings. The air was filled with the sounds of nature, a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.
The best journey takes you back to yourself.
One of the highlights was the Shikoku Village Gallery, designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando. The gallery houses paintings, sculptures, and works of art from the Orient, adding another layer of cultural richness to the village. It was a seamless blend of traditional and modern elements, a testament to the artistic spirit of Shikoku.
Otsuka Museum of Art: A World of Art in One Place
Next on our itinerary was the Otsuka Museum of Art. This museum is unlike any other I’ve ever visited. It houses over 1,000 full-size ceramic reproductions of major works of art from around the world. From the Sistine Chapel to masterpieces by Van Gogh and Monet, it was a comprehensive journey through the history of Western art.

The museum was established by the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group to celebrate its 75th anniversary. The idea was to give Japanese people, who might not have the opportunity to travel abroad, a chance to experience these famous artworks. The reproductions are incredibly detailed, transfer-printed from photographs and retouched before being fired onto ceramic boards, ensuring they last for over 2,000 years.
As an English teacher, I often use art as a medium to teach language and culture. Being surrounded by these reproductions was an inspiring experience, sparking ideas for future lessons. Hans, with his software developer’s eye for detail, was particularly impressed by the technology and precision involved in creating these ceramic masterpieces.
We spent hours wandering through the museum's vast exhibition spaces. The Sistine Chapel reproduction was breathtaking, the life-sized ceiling mural of Michelangelo's “The Last Judgment” truly overwhelming. I found myself craning my neck, trying to take in every detail, just as I imagine visitors do in the Vatican. Monet's Water Lilies, recreated in an outdoor garden, was another highlight, a serene oasis within the museum.
The museum allows photography without restrictions, which is a rare treat. I was able to capture close-up views of my favorite artworks, something that's usually impossible in traditional museums. We even encountered a robot named 'Mr. Art' giving gallery talks, adding a quirky, futuristic touch to the experience.
Dinner and Drinks in Takamatsu
After a full day of cultural immersion, we were ready for a relaxing evening. For dinner, we chose Munagin, a local restaurant known for its Unagi. The meal was delicious, a perfect blend of flavors and textures. It was a great way to experience local cuisine.

To cap off the night, we ventured to BAR OOKUNI. The bar had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day. We enjoyed some local sake, chatting with the friendly bartenders and soaking in the local vibe. It was a delightful end to a day filled with cultural exploration.

As we walked back to our ryokan, I reflected on the day's experiences. Shikoku Village and the Otsuka Museum of Art offered unique perspectives on Japanese culture and art history. It was a day of contrasts, from the simplicity of traditional village life to the grandeur of world-renowned masterpieces, each leaving a lasting impression.
Tomorrow, we're venturing into the natural beauty of Shikoku, visiting the Todoroki Falls and Shikoku Karst. I’m excited to explore the island's stunning landscapes and share those experiences with you all. Before we embark on our nature adventure, we'll grab breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop.
Before I sign off, I wanted to mention that the Sanuki Takamatsu Festival is ongoing. It takes place every year from August 12 to 14 and is one of Shikoku's four major festivals. Unfortunately, we missed the main events, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning a trip to Takamatsu in August. There will be a fireworks display on August 13.
Until tomorrow, keep exploring and stay curious!
