Island Echoes: A Day of Discovery on La Digue

Today, La Digue unveiled more of its secrets, offering a blend of natural beauty and culinary delights that painted a vivid picture of island life. From exploring dense tropical forests to dining with the ocean as our backdrop, it was a day filled with moments that resonated with the soul.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Perle Noire Restaurant. It's a charming spot, known for its Italian cuisine with a Creole twist. I opted for a simple omelette, while Hans enjoyed a plate of fresh tropical fruits. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the island's interior.

Our first stop was the famed tropical forest. The Seychelles boast incredible biodiversity, and La Digue is no exception. As we ventured into the forest, the air grew thick with humidity, and the sounds of unseen creatures filled the space. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, illuminating the vibrant green foliage. We wandered along the marked trails, marveling at the towering takamaka trees and the delicate orchids clinging to their branches. I was hoping to spot the elusive Seychelles paradise flycatcher, a rare bird found only on La Digue, but it remained hidden from view.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After our forest immersion, we made our way to Rocher Roméo et Juliette, a dramatic cliffside viewpoint with a story as captivating as its scenery. Legend has it that this is where star-crossed lovers, much like Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, leapt to their deaths. Whether the tale is true or not, the spot exudes romance and tragedy in equal measure. Hans and I stood at the edge, the wind whipping through our hair, as we gazed out at the endless expanse of the Indian Ocean. The waves crashed against the rocks below, creating a symphony of sound that was both calming and exhilarating. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, a reminder of the power of love and the sometimes tragic choices it leads us to make. I couldn’t help but think of the countless adaptations of the story, from the classic play to the modern film adaptations. The universal theme of love conquering all, even in death, is what makes the story so enduring.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Kafe Kreol Cafe & Restaurant. Situated in Anse Royale, the cafe offered a stunning view of the beach. We indulged in Creole specialties, savoring the flavors of fresh seafood and aromatic spices. I had the grilled fish with Creole sauce, while Hans opted for the octopus curry. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a testament to the island's rich culinary heritage. The relaxed atmosphere of the cafe, with its open-air setting and gentle sea breeze, made it the perfect place to unwind and soak in the beauty of La Digue.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we decided to treat ourselves to some beachside relaxation. We headed to Grand Anse Beach Bar, a lively spot known for its vibrant atmosphere and stunning views. We sipped on refreshing cocktails, the taste of rum and tropical fruits dancing on our tongues. The bar was buzzing with activity, locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. The air was filled with laughter and music, a celebration of island life.

The weather was perfect today, mostly sunny with a gentle breeze, making our outdoor adventures all the more enjoyable. I must admit, I was a bit preoccupied trying to remember to apply sunscreen. I had forgotten my insect repellent and extra sunglasses at home, and I didn't want to add sunburn to the list of forgotten essentials!

Dinner was at Perry's Grillz, a restaurant known for its grilled dishes and panoramic views. Getting there was a bit of an adventure, as the road leading up to the restaurant was quite steep. However, the stunning vista from the top made it all worthwhile. We savored our grilled seafood, the flavors enhanced by the breathtaking sunset unfolding before us. As we ate, we watched giant bats soaring through the valley below, a truly magical sight.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the simple pleasures of island life: the beauty of nature, the warmth of the people, and the deliciousness of the food. La Digue continues to enchant me with its laid-back charm and its hidden treasures.

Tomorrow, we're off to Praslin! I'm particularly excited to visit Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Anse Lazio, one of the world's most beautiful beaches. We'll be having breakfast at Island Cafe, lunch at The Deck Restaurant, and dinner at Paris Seychelles. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Emma's Boutique. It sounds like another exciting day awaits!

I feel so grateful to be able to share these experiences with Hans and to reconnect with my Seychellois roots. It's a journey of discovery, not just of the islands, but of myself. Perhaps I'll even pick up a few new German folk songs to share with my students back in Bonn. Until tomorrow, au revoir!

I'm reminded of a quote I once read:

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”

And isn't that the truth? Each day here is a new opportunity to embrace life to the fullest, to savor every moment, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. I am already looking forward to the next day on Praslin.

It is almost like being home again, and sharing this with Hans is priceless.

I wonder if, after this adventure, we might consider moving back here...

It is a thought I ponder, as I drift off to sleep, the sounds of the ocean lulling me into a peaceful slumber.
