Island Escapades: Anse Marron and Creole Delights

Today was a day of exploration and culinary indulgence here on La Digue. It felt wonderful to be able to share the hidden gems of this island with Hans, showing him a side of my heritage that I hold so dear. The memories of my childhood here are so vivid, and it's a joy to recreate some of those experiences with him.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Jules Take Away. It wasn't quite the Jules Take Away I remember from Mahe Island, but it was close enough. The aroma of Creole spices filled the air, and we enjoyed some delicious local pastries and strong Seychellois coffee. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day, and today, it fueled us for the adventures that lay ahead.

Our main goal for the day was to find Anse Marron, a secluded beach known for its natural pools and stunning rock formations. The hike to Anse Marron is not for the faint of heart. The trail led us over and under massive granite boulders, through dense vegetation, and along the rugged coastline. I was thankful that I had worn sturdy shoes, and I definitely regretted forgetting the insect repellent! Hans, ever the supportive husband, kept me motivated, and we helped each other navigate the trickier parts of the trail.

As we hiked, I shared stories of my childhood, reminiscing about the times my cousins and I would explore these very trails. I remember one time we got lost and ended up spending the night under the stars, a memory that still makes me laugh. It felt good to reconnect with that carefree spirit, even if it was just for a day.

Finally, after a couple of hours of hiking, we arrived at Anse Marron. And what a reward it was! The beach was pristine, with crystal-clear water and dramatic rock formations creating natural pools. The sense of accomplishment we felt after completing the challenging hike made the experience even more special.

We spent a few hours swimming in the calm, protected waters of the natural pools, soaking up the sun, and taking in the breathtaking scenery. It was pure bliss. Hans was in awe of the untouched beauty of the beach, and I could see in his eyes that he was beginning to understand why I hold this island so close to my heart.

As we relaxed on the beach, I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnecting with nature. It's in these moments of stillness that we find clarity, peace, and a deeper appreciation for the world around us.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that require a little bit of effort and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone.

After our relaxing time at Anse Marron, we began the trek back, retracing our steps along the rocky coastline. The hike felt a bit easier this time, perhaps because we knew what to expect, or perhaps because we were still riding high on the euphoria of discovering such a beautiful place.

Next on our list was Grand Anse Beach. Grand Anse is known for its beauty, but also for its strong currents, so swimming isn't always recommended. Today, the waves were crashing against the shore with impressive force, creating a dramatic display of nature's power. We decided to admire the beach from a safe distance, taking photos and enjoying the refreshing sea breeze.

Since swimming at Grand Anse was out of the question, we decided to do some shopping. We headed to Koral Souvenir Boutique, where I hoped to find a special memento of our trip. The boutique was filled with local art, jewelry, and unique handicrafts. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted silk scarf depicting a scene of La Digue's coastline. It will be a perfect reminder of our time here.

For lunch, we chose The Boat House Restaurant, a popular spot known for its Creole cuisine and ocean views. We indulged in a delicious seafood platter, savoring the fresh flavors of the sea. The atmosphere was lively and festive, and we enjoyed watching the boats bobbing in the harbor.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Cafe Lazare for dinner. The restaurant had a cozy and romantic ambiance, perfect for a relaxing evening. We enjoyed a traditional Creole meal, savoring the flavors of coconut milk, spices, and fresh seafood. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Looking back on the day, I feel so grateful for the opportunity to share my island home with Hans. It's been a day of adventure, discovery, and culinary delights. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to explore the tropical forest and Rocher Roméo et Juliette. Perhaps we'll even stop by the Grand Anse Beach Bar for a nightcap. Until then, bonsoir from La Digue!

I am also looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings. I have heard about the lush tropical forest and the Rocher Roméo et Juliette. It will also be great to relax at the Grand Anse Beach Bar.

As I reflect on today, I am reminded of a quote I once read:

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.”

And that is exactly what this trip has been doing for me. It's not just about seeing beautiful places; it's about reconnecting with my roots, rediscovering my identity, and creating lasting memories with the people I love. And I couldn't be more grateful for that.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the tropical forest and Rocher Roméo et Juliette. I am excited to explore more of La Digue’s natural beauty and learn about its history and culture. I am also looking forward to trying Perry's Grillz. I heard that it is a local favorite. And of course, we will end the day at Grand Anse Beach Bar.

This trip is more than just a vacation. It is a journey of self-discovery and a celebration of my heritage. And I am so glad that I get to share it with Hans.
