Day 4: Summiting Dreams: A Day of Heights and Hidden Gems in Chefchaouen
Embark on a journey through Chefchaouen's natural beauty and cultural charm, from mountain summits to serene parks and vibrant shops.
Reaching New Heights in Chefchaouen
Today was a day of exploration that truly captured the essence of Chefchaouen. From challenging hikes to tranquil moments in nature, and delightful encounters with local culture, every experience deepened my appreciation for this blue-washed city. It was a day where physical exertion met serene reflection, creating memories I will cherish long after I leave Morocco.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cremeri Elmaataoui. The pastries were incredibly fresh, offering a sweet start to what promised to be an adventurous day. Aisha was particularly thrilled with her zaazaa, a local specialty, setting a cheerful tone for our morning.

Fueled and ready, Hans and I set out to conquer Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. Aisha stayed back with a friend we made at the hotel, as the hike was a bit strenuous for her. The trail began with a gentle incline, gradually transitioning into steeper paths as we ascended. The views overlooking Chefchaouen were already breathtaking, even before reaching the summit. As we climbed, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment with each step, knowing that the summit would reward us with even more stunning panoramic vistas.

The journey is the destination, especially when that journey leads to panoramic views and personal triumphs.
The hike was moderately challenging, rated Level 2, requiring a good level of physical fitness. Thankfully, I had packed my trusty hiking shoes, which provided excellent grip on the sometimes slippery terrain. As we neared the summit, the trail became a bit tricky to navigate, with multiple paths branching out. Remembering the advice from fellow hikers, we kept an eye out for blue dots painted on the rocks, which helped guide us along the correct route.
Reaching the Jebel El-Kelaa Summit was an exhilarating moment. The panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the Rif Mountains were simply awe-inspiring. The effort it took to get there made the reward all the more satisfying. I spent a good amount of time capturing photos, trying to encapsulate the beauty that stretched out before us. Hans, ever the supportive partner, made sure I had enough water and even shared some German chocolate he had stashed in his backpack – a little taste of home amidst the Moroccan landscape.
After descending from Jebel El-Kelaa, we decided to unwind at Park Sidi Abdelhamid. This park is a true hidden gem, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The lush greenery and vibrant flora created a serene atmosphere, perfect for relaxation. We found a shaded bench and simply sat, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. It was a welcome respite after our adventurous hike.

As we strolled through the park, we discovered hidden pathways that led to stunning viewpoints. The air was filled with the sweet scent of flowers, and the gentle breeze rustled through the trees. It was a perfect spot to reflect on the day's adventures and appreciate the natural beauty of Chefchaouen.
For lunch, we headed to Chez Foad, a local restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We ordered a variety of dishes, including tagine, couscous, and Moroccan salads. Each dish was bursting with flavor, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Morocco. Aisha was particularly fond of the chicken tagine, declaring it the best she had ever tasted.

After lunch, we decided to explore the local shops, making our way to CHAOUEN GIFTS. I was on the hunt for unique souvenirs to bring back home to Bamberg. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted items, from colorful ceramics to intricate woodwork. I found a beautiful blue Chefchaouen clay set, perfect for serving tea in the traditional Moroccan style. Aisha picked out a small, hand-painted tagine as a memento of our trip.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Hamsa for dinner. This restaurant is renowned for its rooftop terrace, offering stunning views of the blue pearl city and Rif Mountains. The panoramic vista was truly unforgettable, especially as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the town. The ambiance was magical, making it the perfect setting for a memorable dinner.

We ordered a selection of vegetarian dishes, including falafel, hummus, and a flavorful vegetable tagine. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. As we savored our meal, we reminisced about the day's adventures, sharing stories and laughter. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore the Chefchaouen Gate and Casa Familia. I'm particularly excited about experiencing the sunset at sunset, a local bar known for its stunning views. It promises to be another day filled with cultural immersion and unforgettable moments.
Tonight, as I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Chefchaouen. Each day here brings new adventures and deeper connections, making this trip with my friends one for the books.
Tomorrow, I hope to find more unique gifts and perhaps try my hand at bargaining for some traditional crafts. I’ve heard the local markets are a great place to find hidden treasures, and I’m eager to put my (still limited) Arabic phrases to the test. Plus, I’m determined to find the perfect pair of sunglasses to replace the ones I forgot – lesson learned! It’s all part of the adventure, after all.
“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” Indeed, every moment in Chefchaouen feels like an investment in memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. And with that, I bid you goodnight from this enchanting blue city. Until tomorrow!
