A Blue Hue Day in Chefchaouen

Today was a day where the color blue wasn't just a color, but an experience. Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl of Morocco, truly lived up to its name. From the moment I stepped out, I was enveloped in a world of azure, cobalt, and indigo. It’s a surreal experience, almost like walking through a dream. The air felt different, the light softer, and every corner presented a new, captivating photo opportunity.

Our day started with breakfast at MIDO'S. It's a cozy little spot, perfect for a quick bite before diving into the day's adventures. I had a traditional Moroccan breakfast – some fresh bread, olive oil, and local goat cheese. It was simple but satisfying, and just the fuel I needed for a day of exploring. Lena would have loved this place, she is always one for a traditional breakfast. It reminded me of our little breakfast spot back in Heidelberg, but with a Moroccan twist.

With our stomachs full, we headed straight for the Blue Medina Tours. I had arranged a tour with Blue Medina Tours, and I have to say, it was worth every penny. Our guide, whose name I unfortunately can't recall, was a local and knew the medina like the back of his hand. He led us through the labyrinthine streets, sharing stories and insights that I wouldn't have discovered on my own. The history of why Chefchaouen is blue is fascinating – from the practical (keeping mosquitoes away) to the spiritual (representing the sky and heaven).

Chefchaouen isn't just a place you see; it's a place you feel. It's where every corner tells a story, and every shade of blue whispers a secret.

The medina itself is a photographer's dream. Every doorway, every wall, every alleyway is a different shade of blue. The light plays tricks, creating shadows and highlights that make each photo unique. I spent a good chunk of the morning snapping away, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. I even managed to find a few hidden courtyards, tucked away from the main thoroughfares, where the silence was broken only by the gentle sound of a nearby fountain.

Next on the itinerary was Bab El Ain. This is one of the main entrances to the old city and a significant landmark. The architecture here is stunning, a blend of Moroccan and Andalusian styles. The intricate designs and the vibrant atmosphere made it a perfect spot to soak in the local culture. Plus, it was a great place to people-watch. I saw locals going about their daily lives, children playing, and tourists like myself, all marveling at the beauty of Chefchaouen.

After a morning of exploring, we were all starving. We decided to have lunch at Restaurant Triana. It was a fantastic choice. The restaurant has a cozy and romantic atmosphere, with live music and a rooftop terrace that offers stunning views of the city. I opted for the lamb tagine, which was slow-cooked to perfection with aromatic spices. It was absolutely divine. My friends tried the pastello and some vegetarian options, and everyone raved about their meals. The service was excellent, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It felt like a real treat to sit there, enjoying delicious food and soaking in the atmosphere.

With renewed energy, we dedicated the afternoon to shopping for Chefchaouen crafts. The medina is a treasure trove of handmade goods, from woven blankets and carpets to leather goods and pottery. I was on the hunt for a unique souvenir to bring back to Lena and Sophie. After a bit of haggling (which is all part of the fun), I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl with intricate designs. I think they'll both love it. I also picked up a few smaller items, like some traditional spices and a leather wallet, as gifts for friends back in Heidelberg. I even considered taking a wool weaving workshop, but maybe I'll do that next time.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves back in the medina, wandering aimlessly through the blue alleys. The light was softer now, casting long shadows and creating an even more magical atmosphere. Street performers had started to appear, filling the air with music and laughter. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
For dinner, we chose Restaurant Ali Baba, enticed by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine. The cozy ambiance and the aroma of spices created a welcoming atmosphere. I decided to try the couscous, a classic Moroccan dish, and it was a delightful explosion of flavors and textures. The tender semolina grains, combined with the savory vegetables and succulent meat, made for a truly satisfying meal. My friends opted for other traditional dishes, and everyone was equally pleased with their choices.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Kasbah and the vue panoramique de la plage. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Chefchaouen has to offer. I also hear that The Magic Lamp House of Aladin is a great place for a drink, so we might check that out in the evening.
Chefchaouen has a certain charm that’s hard to put into words. It’s more than just the blue walls; it’s the atmosphere, the people, the culture. It’s a place that stays with you long after you leave. I can't wait for tomorrow's adventures. Good night from the Blue Pearl!
