Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco with Friends
Day 3: Scaling the Heights and Soaking in the Views: A Day in Chefchaouen's Wild Side
Embark on an exhilarating hike to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Talassemtane National Park.
Conquering Chefchaouen's Peaks & Valleys
Today was all about embracing the rugged beauty surrounding Chefchaouen. With my friends, I ventured beyond the blue-washed medina, trading the labyrinthine streets for mountain trails and panoramic vistas. It was a day of physical challenges, breathtaking scenery, and that satisfying feeling of earning a well-deserved view.
Our day kicked off with breakfast at Café Sindibad. I went with Lena, while the others met us there. It was a great spot with a warm atmosphere. I ordered some delicious Moroccan pancakes and coffee. Fueled up and ready, we set off towards Jebel El-Kelaa Summit.

The hike started with a gentle incline. The initial part of the trail was manageable, a steady uphill road that allowed us to find our rhythm. The weather was perfect for hiking, cool and crisp, ideal for layering. I was so glad I remembered to pack my hiking boots. I was also thankful I had remembered to bring my camera, as I knew I would want to capture the views from the summit.
As we ascended, the path became steeper and rockier, demanding more from our legs and lungs. The clear, well-marked trails made navigation relatively straightforward. We took breaks to catch our breath and hydrate, marveling at the ever-expanding views of Chefchaouen nestled below and the Rif Mountains stretching out before us.
The journey matters as much as the destination.
The final push to the summit was the most challenging. The path was steep and slippery, requiring careful footing and a bit of scrambling. Proper hiking shoes were essential, and I was grateful for the good grip of mine. Reaching the top, however, made it all worthwhile. The panoramic views were simply stunning. We could see for miles in every direction, the blue city a tiny jewel in a vast landscape. We spent a good amount of time at the summit, soaking in the scenery, snapping photos, and sharing a sense of accomplishment.
After conquering Jebel El-Kelaa, we descended and headed towards Parc National de Talassemtane.

We packed our hiking gear and drove about 45 minutes from Chefchaouen. The park was established to protect Morocco’s endangered fir forests. Talassemtane National Park spans an area of approximately 589.5 square kilometers.
We chose a trail that led us through forests of Moroccan fir trees. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the scent of pine. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including Barbary macaques. We kept our eyes peeled, hoping to spot some of these playful creatures, but they remained elusive today. We continued our hike, enjoying the tranquility of the forest and the beauty of the natural surroundings.
For lunch, we stopped at Sandwich Chez Aziz.

It was a great place to grab a quick bite. I got a chicken shawarma, and it was delicious. After lunch, we made our way back to Chefchaouen, tired but content.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the blue city, we decided to unwind at Bar Oum Rabie.

The bar had a cozy atmosphere with a beautiful view. I enjoyed a refreshing drink while watching the sunset. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.
Before dinner, Lena and I strolled through the medina, reflecting on the day’s adventures. We chatted about our favorite moments – the breathtaking view from Jebel El-Kelaa, the peacefulness of Talassemtane National Park, and the simple pleasure of enjoying a meal together after a long day of hiking.
For dinner, we chose Chez Foad.

The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of spices filled the air. We ordered a tagine, and it was flavorful and satisfying.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning a more relaxed day exploring the cultural side of Chefchaouen. We'll be joining Blue Medina Tours for a guided walk through the medina, learning about its history and unique architecture. We also plan to visit Bab El Ain, a historic gate that offers another glimpse into the city's past. I’m also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at Chefchaouen crafts.

I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the chance to challenge myself physically, immerse myself in nature, and create lasting memories with friends. As I drifted off to sleep, I was already looking forward to another day of exploration in this enchanting blue city.
I'm also realizing I forgot to pack my Arabic phrasebook and a power adapter for the Moroccan outlets. It's a good thing most people speak French, and I can get by with my limited knowledge from my time in Heidelberg.
Join Michael and friends as they explore Chefchaouen's blue streets, local cuisine, and scenic hikes in Morocco's enchanting region.
