Exploring the Ancient Forests of Yakushima
Day 4: Chasing Waterfalls and Coastal Views: A Day of Discovery in Yakushima
Explore the majestic Senpiro Falls and the historic Yakushima-todai Lighthouse with Patricia and friends on their Yakushima adventure.
Exploring Yakushima's Natural Wonders
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Yakushima, from cascading waterfalls to panoramic coastal vistas. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – immersing myself in nature and discovering hidden gems with my friends. The air here is so clean, and the scenery is simply breathtaking.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Smiley. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, which gave me the energy I needed for the day's adventures. David went for a western-style breakfast, and although he enjoyed it, he admitted he had food envy over my Japanese breakfast. After breakfast, we headed towards our first destination: Senpiro Falls.
Senpiro Falls: A Symphony of Water and Stone
As we approached Senpiro Falls, the sound of the water grew louder, building anticipation. The falls are easily accessible from the car park, a short walk leading to a viewing area. Even from a distance, the sight was impressive – a 60-meter cascade of water plunging down a jagged valley. The sheer scale of the granite rock face, said to be the size of a thousand rice fields, was awe-inspiring.

Unfortunately, the walkway to get closer to the falls was closed due to a landslide. While I was a bit disappointed, the view from the observation decks was still incredible. The surrounding landscape was lush and green, with the distant ocean providing a stunning backdrop. The vantage points offered unique photographic opportunities, and I snapped away, trying to capture the essence of this natural wonder. I can see why it's such a popular destination !
Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
After taking in the falls, we climbed the approximately 200 stairs back up. It was a bit of a workout, but the views from the top were worth it. We also stopped by the small store near the parking lot, hoping to find some local produce or souvenirs, but it was closed.
Yakushima-todai Lighthouse: A Beacon of History and Beauty
Next on our itinerary was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive there was an adventure in itself, as we wound our way along the coastal roads, enjoying panoramic views of the island. The lighthouse is located on the northwestern part of the island , and as we approached, the white tower stood out against the backdrop of the lush green landscape and the deep blue ocean.

The Yakushima-todai Lighthouse isn't just a navigational aid; it's a symbol of Yakushima's maritime heritage. Built to guide vessels safely through these waters, it now serves as a tourist attraction, offering panoramic views of the coastline and the Pacific Ocean. The scent of the sea and the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore created a calming atmosphere.
We walked around the lighthouse, taking in the stunning vistas. The rugged coastline, the vast expanse of the ocean, and the surrounding forests created a breathtaking scene. I imagined the countless sailors who had relied on this beacon over the years, guiding them safely through treacherous waters. I couldn’t help but think about my dad, who spent his life sailing the waters around Bermuda. I felt a deep connection to the sea and the history of seafaring.
Culinary Delights and Evening Relaxation
For lunch, we stopped at Kamogawa Restaurant. The restaurant offered a variety of local dishes, and I decided to try the deep-fried flying fish combo, a Yakushima specialty. The fish was crispy and flavorful, and the meal came with miso soup and rice. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of exploration.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Ambar, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and extensive drink menu. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. We enjoyed some local spirits and chatted with the friendly locals, soaking in the island's culture. David and I even tried our hand at darts, though I won’t say who won (or lost!). It was a fun and relaxing way to end a day filled with natural beauty and historical significance.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Yakushima National Park. We're planning a visit to the Kurio River View and a relaxing stroll along Inakahama Beach. I’m also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Michikusa for breakfast, Subarashi Indian Restaurant for lunch and Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan for dinner. I’m also hoping to pick up some souvenirs at Yakushima BLESS. I’m sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, and the island's beauty is both humbling and inspiring. I'm so grateful to be able to share these experiences with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Until tomorrow, happy travels!
I'm truly grateful for these moments and excited to see what tomorrow brings. I’m also trying to remember to buy some insect repellent; the mosquitos are relentless!
