Kyoto's Gentle Embrace

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a serene waltz through Kyoto's cultural heart. I find myself reflecting on the quiet moments, the subtle flavors, and the enduring beauty that this city so effortlessly offers. It's hard to believe this journey is nearing its end, but I'm determined to soak up every last drop of its essence.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at Kakyo. It was a delightful experience that set the tone for the day. The French-inspired Japanese course meal was a unique blend of flavors, a testament to Kyoto's culinary innovation. As a chef, I always appreciate seeing how different cultures can influence and elevate each other’s cuisine.

With a satisfied stomach, I set off to Heian Shrine. The shrine’s vermilion architecture against the clear winter sky was a sight to behold. While I was there, I learned that if I had visited a few weeks earlier, on February 3rd, I could have witnessed the Setsubun festival, a lively tradition of bean-throwing to ward off evil spirits. Still, the peaceful atmosphere was reward enough. It was easy to imagine emperors of old strolling through these very grounds. The crisp air and the gentle sunlight filtering through the trees created an aura of tranquility.

I took my time wandering through the shrine's gardens, a meticulously designed landscape that showcased the Japanese reverence for nature. Every stone, every plant, seemed to be placed with intention, creating a harmonious balance that was both calming and inspiring. It reminded me of the gardens back in Gorkha, though on a grander scale.

From Heian Shrine, I made my way to Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. In comparison to the manicured gardens of the shrine, this was a sprawling green space, a national park right in the heart of the city. I learned that during the Sakura season, which is expected to start around March 27th, this garden transforms into a floral wonderland, with cherry blossoms, magnolias, peach trees, and camellias blooming in abundance. It’s a popular spot for *hanami*, the traditional cherry blossom viewing parties.

Even without the cherry blossoms, the garden held a quiet charm. I strolled along its paths, observing locals enjoying their lunch breaks, families picnicking, and elderly couples taking leisurely walks. It struck me how this garden served as a communal space, a place where people from all walks of life could come together to appreciate the simple pleasures of nature. I found a quiet bench and spent some time journaling, reflecting on my journey so far and jotting down recipe ideas inspired by the local cuisine.

Next on my itinerary was Takashimaya Kyoto S.C., a department store that promised a taste of modern Kyoto. While I'm generally not one for shopping, I was intrigued by the arts and crafts salon and the dining garden on the seventh floor. The store itself was a bustling hub of activity, a stark contrast to the serenity of the gardens. I browsed through the various departments, admiring the intricate craftsmanship of the local artisans and the stylish displays of contemporary fashion. I even made a stop at the Nintendo Kyoto store on the 7th floor, where I saw a lot of cool merchandise from various games.

I couldn’t resist indulging in some retail therapy, picking up a few souvenirs for Anjali and Arjun. I ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf for Anjali, adorned with a traditional Kyoto design, and a quirky Nintendo-themed gadget for Arjun, knowing he’d appreciate the playful nod to Japanese pop culture. It’s always a joy to bring back little pieces of my travels to share with my family.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its grand monuments, but also in its quiet corners and subtle flavors.

As evening approached, I ventured into Gion, Kyoto's geisha district. I wandered along Hanamikoji Street, the area's most iconic thoroughfare, with its preserved wooden machiya houses, teahouses, and restaurants. The atmosphere was thick with history and intrigue. I was hoping to spot a geiko or maiko gracefully gliding through the streets, but alas, it wasn't my lucky day. I did learn that there is a Gion Kagai Art Museum in the area, which offers a deeper insight into the culture of *kagai*, the traditional entertainment districts featuring geiko and maiko. Perhaps I'll visit it next time.

Hanamikoji Street was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to experience the magic of Gion. I observed the scene, taking in the sights and sounds of this unique neighborhood. The traditional architecture, the soft glow of the lanterns, and the murmur of conversations created an enchanting ambiance. It felt like stepping back in time, a glimpse into a world of refined elegance and artistry.

For lunch, I had made a reservation at Sakuragawa, a kaiseki restaurant near the Takase River. The restaurant’s interior was elegant and intimate, with a counter made from Japanese cypress and a private room for small groups. I opted for the counter seating, eager to watch the chefs at work, and was not disappointed. The kaiseki lunch was an exquisite affair, a multi-course culinary journey that showcased the best of seasonal ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. I savored every bite, appreciating the harmony of flavors and the attention to detail.

The chefs at Sakuragawa were masters of their craft, their movements precise and graceful. I watched with fascination as they transformed humble ingredients into culinary masterpieces. They were passionate about their work, their love for food evident in every dish they created. It was an inspiring experience, a reminder of the dedication and artistry that goes into creating exceptional cuisine. It made me think of my own restaurant back in Leipzig and how I could incorporate some of these techniques and flavors into my Nepali dishes.

Dinner was at Nishikawa, a restaurant that offers an exquisite Kyoto dining experience. The chef, Masayoshi Nishikawa, is known for his generous and friendly style, making guests feel comfortable with jokes and conversation. Nishikawa's cuisine blends traditional Japanese techniques with Western ingredients, resulting in unique and innovative dishes. The restaurant itself is located near Yasaka Shrine and Kodaiji Temple, adding to the atmosphere of the dining experience.

My meal at Nishikawa was a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration. The food was exceptional, each dish a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable. The ambiance was elegant and refined, creating a truly memorable dining experience. As I savored the last bite of my dessert, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. It had been a day of discovery, a day of immersing myself in the beauty and culture of Kyoto.

As I walked back to The Royal Park Hotel Iconic Kyoto, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this solo journey. It had allowed me to connect with myself, to explore my passions, and to discover new perspectives. I thought of Anjali and Arjun back in Leipzig, and I knew that I would return to them with a renewed sense of inspiration and a heart full of memories.

Tomorrow marks the last day of my trip, and I plan to make the most of it by visiting Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, and Namba Yasaka Jinja. I am also thinking of checking out WORLD KYOTO, a popular bar in the area, before heading back to Leipzig. I'm excited for one last day of adventure before I return home.

Until then, *Sayōnara* from Kyoto!
