Finding Peace in the Bamboo Groves of Arashiyama

Today, I traded the familiar sizzle of my Leipzig kitchen for the tranquil rustling of bamboo in Arashiyama. It was a day dedicated to nature's artistry, a soothing balm for the soul before I dive back into the culinary chaos. I was looking forward to a day of escaping the city.

The day began as most do here, with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Yasakadori Enraku. I must admit, the light flavours were a welcome change from the hearty Nepali dishes I'm used to preparing. It was a gentle awakening for the palate, preparing me for the sensory feast that Arashiyama promised. I was eager to get started with the day, as the February weather was a comfortable 2-10°C (36-50°F), perfect for walking around.

My first stop was the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. I’d seen countless photos, but nothing prepared me for the sheer, verdant reality. Stepping into the grove felt like entering another world, a cathedral of towering stalks reaching for the sky. The light filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path, and the air was filled with a soft, whispering sound – the bamboo swaying in the breeze. I spent a good hour simply wandering, lost in the emerald embrace of the forest. The crowds were relatively thin, perhaps due to the early hour or the fact that it's February, which added to the sense of serenity.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world.

Emerging from the bamboo forest, I found myself drawn to Tenryu-ji Temple, a Zen temple with a history as rich and verdant as the bamboo surrounding it. The temple gardens were a masterpiece of landscape design, a harmonious blend of manicured lawns, ancient trees, and carefully placed stones. I sat for a while by the pond, watching the carp glide through the water, their scales flashing like jewels in the sunlight. The temple itself exuded an aura of peace and contemplation, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While the Cloud-Dragon Painting in the Hatto was closed to the public today, I was still able to appreciate the beauty of the gardens and the overall serenity of the temple.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Arash's Kitchen, a Persian and Indian restaurant that offered a welcome change of pace. As much as I love Japanese cuisine, a little taste of home was just what I needed. I savoured the aromatic kebabs and flavorful curries, reminiscing about the spices and aromas of my own kitchen in Leipzig. It was a reminder that even when I'm far from home, a good meal can transport me back in an instant. I learned that Arash's Kitchen is conveniently located near many tourist spots, and that it is known for its halal dishes.

In the afternoon, I ventured to Okochi Sanso Garden, the former villa of the actor Denjiro Okochi. This was perhaps the highlight of my day. The gardens were simply stunning, a meticulously crafted landscape that offered breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the city below. I wandered along winding paths, discovering hidden tea houses and tranquil ponds, each offering a unique perspective on the beauty of nature. At the end of my walk, I was treated to a complimentary cup of matcha tea and a sweet, a perfect ending to a perfect afternoon. It was a tranquil and peaceful experience, well worth the entry fee.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back towards the city, but not before stopping at L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its unique cocktails and magical atmosphere. It was a delightful way to end the day, sipping on expertly crafted drinks in a whimsical setting. The bartender was French, and very handsome! The bar was within a 5-minute walk from Kyoto Kawara Station.

Reflecting on the day, I realised that Arashiyama is more than just a beautiful place; it's an experience that touches the soul. The bamboo forest, the temples, the gardens – they all combine to create a sense of peace and harmony that is both rare and precious. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world.

Tomorrow, I'm heading to Fushimi Inari Shrine, Tōfuku-ji Temple and Nijō Castle. I plan on starting my day with breakfast at Khaos Spice Diner, lunch at Hafuu, and dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO. I'm also hoping to pick up some souvenirs at the Kyoto Crafts Store. I'm excited to see what culinary delights and cultural experiences await me.

For now, though, I'm content to savour the memories of today, the whispers of the bamboo, and the serenity of Arashiyama. I'm reminded of a Nepali saying: “The quieter you become, the more you can hear.” Today, I listened, and Arashiyama spoke volumes.

This trip is turning out to be exactly what I needed. A chance to reconnect with nature, to explore a new culture, and to find inspiration for my cooking. It's a reminder that life is a journey, and that every experience, no matter how small, can enrich our lives in profound ways.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to be here, to share my experiences with you, and to continue on this culinary and cultural adventure. Until tomorrow, Namaste from Kyoto!

P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to find a power adapter for the Japanese outlets today. It's the little things that make a big difference when you're travelling.

P.P.S. I am missing Anjali and Arjun, and I wish they were here to experience this with me.
