Diving Deep into Taroudant's Soul
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the true essence of Taroudant. After two days of settling in, I was eager to explore the local crafts and culinary delights that this 'Grandmother of Marrakech' had to offer. I was particularly excited to see the tanneries and the artisan market, places where the soul of a city truly resides.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Snack Havana. Maximilian and I shared a couple of Moroccan pancakes, which were light, fluffy, and drizzled with local honey. Elena, of course, opted for a simple croissant. The atmosphere was buzzing with locals, always a good sign, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. It's these small, authentic experiences that I cherish the most when traveling. It reminded me of the small fondas back in Cholula, where the warmth of the people is as satisfying as the food itself.

After breakfast, we ventured towards Dar al-Dabbagh, the tannery. The air was thick with a pungent smell, a mix of dyes and animal hides, a stark contrast to the sweet scent of honey from breakfast. I must admit, it was a bit overwhelming at first, even with the sprig of basil offered to mask the odor. However, witnessing the ancient process of tanning leather, a craft passed down through generations, was truly fascinating. The vibrant colors of the dyes, the skilled hands of the artisans, and the sheer amount of labor involved were awe-inspiring. I couldn't help but think about the history embedded in each piece of leather, the stories of the animals, the artisans, and the people who would eventually wear or use the finished product.

The true beauty of a place lies not just in its scenic views, but in the stories woven into its crafts and the flavors that dance on your palate.Next on our itinerary was the Grande marché de l'artisanat. As we stepped into the market, we were immediately enveloped in a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and scents. Stalls overflowed with handcrafted goods: Berber carpets, intricate pottery, leather bags, and sparkling jewelry. The energy was palpable, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists haggling for the best prices. I was particularly drawn to the Berber carpets, each one a unique work of art, telling a story through its intricate patterns and vibrant colors. I imagined these carpets adorning the floors of homes, adding warmth and character to living spaces, much like the traditional rugs my grandmother used to weave back in Mexico. I picked up a small, handwoven rug with geometric designs, a perfect souvenir to remind me of Taroudant's rich cultural heritage. Maximilian bartered for a beautiful, handcrafted leather satchel, perfect for carrying his photography gear. Elena, of course, was captivated by the colorful jewelry, and after some negotiation, we managed to get her a delicate silver bracelet with tiny Berber symbols.

For lunch, we decided to try Chouwaya Tinzert, a local restaurant known for its grilled meats and Moroccan salads. The restaurant was bustling, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the delicious food. We ordered a mixed grill platter, a feast of lamb, chicken, and beef, all perfectly seasoned and grilled to perfection. The meats were accompanied by a variety of salads: fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and olives, all drizzled with local olive oil. The flavors were vibrant and refreshing, a welcome contrast to the rich and spicy dishes we had been eating. Elena, surprisingly, devoured a plate of grilled chicken, a rare occurrence for my usually picky eater. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, and we enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff and fellow diners.

After lunch, we stumbled upon Aladdin Treasure, a shopping mall that promised a modern take on Moroccan crafts. While it was interesting to see a more contemporary shopping experience, I felt it lacked the authenticity and charm of the Grande marché de l'artisanat. It felt a bit too commercialized, a stark contrast to the raw and genuine atmosphere of the souk. However, it was a good place to find some practical items, and I managed to pick up a much-needed power adapter, something I had forgotten to pack.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Tajine restaurant for dinner. I was determined to try an authentic Moroccan tagine, and this place came highly recommended. The restaurant was cozy and intimate, with soft lighting and traditional Moroccan decor. We ordered a lamb tagine with apricots and almonds, a classic Moroccan dish. The tagine arrived in a traditional earthenware pot, the aroma of spices filling the air. The lamb was incredibly tender, falling off the bone, and the apricots and almonds added a touch of sweetness and crunch. The flavors were rich and complex, a perfect blend of sweet, savory, and spicy. It was a truly unforgettable culinary experience, a testament to the artistry and skill of Moroccan cuisine.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Musée Plein Air Claudio Bravo and Bab El Kasbah. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the open-air museum, as I have heard it offers a unique blend of art and nature. I'm also excited to explore Bab El Kasbah, one of the ancient gates of Taroudant, and soak in its rich history and vibrant atmosphere. I am hoping to find a nice café there, maybe the Café-Restaurant Bab El Kasbah, to just sit and watch people go by. Today was a sensory overload in the best possible way. From the pungent smells of the tannery to the vibrant colors of the souk and the exquisite flavors of the tagine, Taroudant had awakened my senses and ignited my soul. I am so grateful for these experiences, for the opportunity to connect with a different culture and to learn about the traditions and customs of the Moroccan people. And I'm especially grateful to share it all with Maximilian and Elena. It's these shared moments that make our travels so special and create memories that will last a lifetime. I couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow would bring, what new adventures and discoveries awaited us in this enchanting city. I am also hoping I will not forget my sunglasses tomorrow, as I did today.
