A Day Away From the Blue

Today, I traded the mesmerizing blue alleys of Chefchaouen for the equally captivating greens of the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. It was a refreshing change of pace, reminding me that there's more to this region than just its famous azure hues. I was eager to explore the natural beauty just a short distance from the city, and I was not disappointed.

My day began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast at Galitos. Greta always says I need to start the day with a good meal, and she's usually right. Galitos offered a delightful start, with a menu that blended Moroccan flavors with familiar Italian touches. I opted for a traditional Moroccan tagine, while my friends chose some pasta dishes. It’s always interesting to see how different cultures can influence each other, even in the culinary world. The staff were incredibly friendly, making recommendations and ensuring we felt right at home. I made a mental note to try to recreate the tagine when I get back to Berlin – Greta would love it!

Fuelled and ready, we set off towards Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. The drive itself was scenic, offering glimpses of the Rif Mountains and the verdant landscapes that surround Chefchaouen. As we approached the reserve, the air grew noticeably fresher, and the temperature dipped slightly – a welcome change from the summer heat. I could already feel the stress of city life melting away.

The Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve is a sprawling expanse of natural beauty. Covering a vast area, it's home to diverse flora and fauna, including various species of oak, pine, and cedar. I was particularly excited about the prospect of spotting some of the local wildlife. As we began our hike, I kept my eyes peeled for birds, mammals, and reptiles that call this park home. I didn't spot any Barbary macaques, sadly, but the birdlife was abundant and captivating.

We chose a well-marked trail that wound its way through the lush greenery. The path offered breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, a stunning contrast to the urban landscape I’d become accustomed to over the past few days. The reserve is known for its hiking trails, which cater to different fitness levels. We opted for a moderate route that allowed us to soak in the scenery without pushing ourselves too hard. I made sure to bring my camera to capture the stunning vistas and the vibrant flora. I am hoping to get some good shots for the blog!

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Hiking through Jebel Bouhachem was a sensory experience. The scent of pine filled the air, and the sounds of nature – birdsong, rustling leaves, and the gentle breeze – created a soothing symphony. It was a welcome escape from the noise and bustle of Chefchaouen. I found myself reflecting on the importance of preserving these natural spaces, not just for the sake of biodiversity but also for our own well-being. I know Lila would have loved this place. I will have to bring her next time.

After a fulfilling hike, we worked up quite the appetite. For lunch, we decided to try Chez Hicham, a restaurant known for its Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant boasts a beautiful view and outdoor seating, allowing us to continue enjoying the pleasant weather. I decided to sample their Moroccan chicken salad, while my friends opted for the tagine and grilled meats. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and welcoming. It felt like a genuine taste of Moroccan hospitality. I made a mental note to try and replicate the chicken salad back home – it was the perfect blend of flavors and textures.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back towards Chefchaouen. But our day wasn't over yet! Before heading back to the riad, we decided to check out Restaurant Bar Chaouen for a relaxing evening drink. I’d heard it was a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering a mix of Mediterranean, Moroccan, and Arabic cuisines.

Restaurant Bar Chaouen had a lively and welcoming vibe. It was easy to see why it’s a popular gathering place. We settled in with some local drinks and enjoyed the atmosphere. Apparently, they sometimes have live music, but not tonight. It was still a great spot to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. The bar is known to be open from 11:00 to 23:00 daily. I think it’s safe to say that this place is a safe bet for a relaxed evening.

As the evening drew to a close, we made our way back to Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, feeling tired but content. It was a day of contrasts – from the vibrant greens of Jebel Bouhachem to the lively atmosphere of Restaurant Bar Chaouen. It reinforced my belief that travel is about experiencing a place in its entirety, embracing both its natural beauty and its cultural richness. I am looking forward to tomorrow, when we will be visiting Parc National de Talassemtane. I am hoping it will be as beautiful as today.

Tonight, I'm especially grateful for my friends, who make every adventure more memorable. Traveling with companions enriches the experience, offering different perspectives and shared moments of joy. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn’t help but smile, already anticipating the adventures that tomorrow would bring.
