A Day of Discovery in Kyoto

Today was a whirlwind of history, art, and spirituality as we explored some of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks. From the majestic Nijo Castle to the vibrant Kyoto International Manga Museum and the serene Kamigamo Shrine, each destination offered a unique glimpse into the soul of this captivating city. It was a day filled with wonder and appreciation for the rich cultural heritage that Kyoto so effortlessly preserves.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arancino Kyoto. While Hans enjoyed a classic Italian breakfast, Lara and I opted for the Japanese set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly cooked rice. It was a delightful start to what promised to be a day of exploration. I must admit, even though I am Cambodian, I have come to love Japanese cuisine, especially the subtle flavors and the emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Stepping Back in Time at Nijo Castle

Our first stop was Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa shoguns. As a librarian specializing in Southeast Asian history, I'm always fascinated by the intricate details of historical architecture, and Nijo Castle did not disappoint. The castle, built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, is a testament to the power and prestige of the shogunate. Walking through the imposing Karamon gate, I could almost feel the weight of history surrounding us.

The squeaking 'nightingale floors' of Ninomaru Palace served as an ingenious security system, a testament to the ingenuity of the castle's design.

The Ninomaru Palace, with its multiple buildings connected by corridors featuring the famous 'nightingale floors,' was particularly impressive. These floors were designed to squeak underfoot, acting as a security system to alert the shogun to any potential intruders. I found it fascinating how such a simple yet effective mechanism could provide such a high level of security. The intricate artwork on the sliding doors and the beautifully decorated ceilings were also a sight to behold. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the defensive strategies evident in the castle's layout, while Lara was captivated by the stories of hidden warriors and secret passages.

The gardens surrounding the palace were equally stunning, with meticulously manicured lawns, serene ponds, and carefully placed ornamental stones. We spent a good hour wandering through the gardens, soaking in the tranquility and admiring the beauty of the natural landscape. It was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Diving into the World of Manga

From the historical grandeur of Nijo Castle, we ventured into the colorful and contemporary world of the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Housed in a renovated elementary school, the museum is a celebration of all things manga, with a collection of over 300,000 items. As someone who appreciates art and storytelling, I was eager to explore this unique cultural institution.

The museum's most impressive feature is undoubtedly the 'Wall of Manga,' a towering display of approximately 50,000 manga volumes that visitors can freely access and read. Lara was in her element, excitedly browsing through the shelves and discovering new titles. She even convinced Hans to try reading a manga, which led to some amusing attempts at deciphering the Japanese text. I was particularly interested in the museum's exhibits on the history of manga, which traced its evolution from Edo-period woodblock prints to the modern-day global phenomenon.

We also enjoyed the special exhibits, which showcased original artwork and manuscripts from famous manga artists. It was fascinating to see the creative process behind these beloved stories and to gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry and skill involved. The museum also offers kamishibai performances, a traditional Japanese storytelling format that uses illustrated paper cards. Although the performances were in Japanese, the expressive narration and vibrant visuals made it easy to follow along and enjoy the experience.

Before leaving, we stopped by the museum shop, where Lara picked up a few manga volumes and some character goods. I couldn't resist buying a set of manga-themed postcards, which I plan to send to my librarian colleagues back in Dresden. It will be a fun way to share my experiences and introduce them to the world of Japanese manga.

A Spiritual Retreat at Kamigamo Shrine

Our final destination for the day was Kamigamo Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest and most important Shinto shrines. Founded in the 7th century, the shrine is dedicated to Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Okami, the god of thunder. As we approached the shrine, I could feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. The air was fresh and clean, and the surrounding forest was lush and green.

The shrine's architecture is a beautiful example of traditional Shinto design, with its elegant wooden structures, gracefully curved roofs, and vibrant red accents. We took our time exploring the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and soaking in the serene atmosphere. The main hall and the secondary hall, both designated as National Treasures, were particularly impressive. I was struck by the sense of history and tradition that permeated every corner of the shrine.

The serene atmosphere of Kamigamo Shrine offered a moment of reflection, reminding us of the enduring power of faith and tradition.

One of the unique features of Kamigamo Shrine is the tatezuna, two conical sand mounds that represent the sacred Mount Koyama, where the deity Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Okami is said to have descended from heaven. These sand mounds are carefully maintained and are considered to be a powerful spiritual site.

As we wandered through the shrine, we came across a small stream, the Nara no Ogawa, which flows through the grounds. The sound of the water was soothing and calming, and we paused for a moment to enjoy the peaceful ambiance. Lara was fascinated by the koi fish swimming in the stream, and she spent several minutes watching them glide through the water.

Before leaving Kamigamo Shrine, we took a moment to offer a prayer for good health and happiness for our family. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural exploration, reminding us of the importance of spirituality and tradition in Japanese society.

A Culinary Conclusion

After a full day of sightseeing, we were ready for a delicious dinner. We had reservations at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, an Italian restaurant known for its beautiful setting and exquisite cuisine. The restaurant is housed in a former residence of a renowned Japanese painter, and the atmosphere was elegant and refined.

We opted for the seasonal tasting menu, which featured a variety of dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the seafood was succulent, and the desserts were heavenly. Hans particularly enjoyed the wine pairing, which complemented each course perfectly. Lara, always the adventurous eater, tried everything on the menu and declared it all delicious. I must say, it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time.

A Final Stop at Kyoto LOFT

Before heading back to Hotel Rings Kyoto, we made a quick stop at Kyoto LOFT, a department store known for its unique and stylish goods. I was hoping to find a few souvenirs to take back home, and LOFT did not disappoint. The store was filled with a wide variety of items, from traditional crafts to modern gadgets.

I ended up buying a beautiful set of lacquerware bowls, a few packs of Japanese stationery, and a quirky cat-shaped teapot that I know Lara will love. LOFT is a great place to find unique and memorable gifts, and I'm glad we made the effort to stop by.

As we made our way back to the hotel, I reflected on the incredible day we had experienced. From the historical grandeur of Nijo Castle to the vibrant art of the Manga Museum and the spiritual serenity of Kamigamo Shrine, Kyoto had once again captivated us with its rich cultural tapestry. I am so grateful for these experiences with my family.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Shimogamo Shrine, Kyoto Tower, and Kodaiji Temple. I'm particularly excited about visiting Kyoto Tower, as I've heard it offers stunning panoramic views of the city. I'm also looking forward to exploring Kodaiji Temple, which is known for its beautiful Zen gardens. And perhaps Hans and I can sneak away for a drink at Caamm bar, I hear it's quite the place.

Until tomorrow, dear readers, stay tuned for more adventures in Kyoto!
