Day 3: A Day of Sacred Spaces and Culinary Delights in Kyoto
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's spiritual heart with visits to stunning temples and indulge in the city's diverse culinary scene.
Echoes of a Thousand Torii and Ancient Halls
Today was a day of profound exploration, where the ancient spirits of Kyoto seemed to whisper through every temple gate and across every meticulously raked garden. The blend of vibrant colors, serene landscapes, and exquisite flavors left me in a state of awe, deepening my connection to this captivating city.
Our day began early, fueled by anticipation and a hearty breakfast at Anzukko. This cozy spot was a delightful start, offering a taste of local comfort food that prepared us for the adventures ahead. The gyoza were simply divine, each bite a burst of flavor that energized us for our temple visits.

First on our itinerary was the breathtaking Fushimi Inari Taisha. As we approached, the sight of the seemingly endless vermillion torii gates snaking up the mountainside was truly mesmerizing. Lara was particularly excited, her eyes wide with wonder as we stepped beneath the first gate. The sheer scale of the shrine is awe-inspiring, and the thousands of torii donated by individuals and businesses create a pathway that feels both sacred and surreal.

We walked as far as we could, taking in the smaller shrines and statues along the way. The ascent was a bit challenging, but the views overlooking Kyoto were well worth the effort. I couldn’t help but reflect on the countless worshippers who have made this pilgrimage over the centuries, each seeking blessings for prosperity and success. It was easy to see why foxes are considered messengers of the deity Inari, spotting their statues guarding the grounds. We even tried Inari sushi, rice stuffed in aburaage (deep-fried tofu), a local favorite said to be a fox's preferred meal. The experience was a sensory feast, from the vibrant colors to the tantalizing aromas and the palpable sense of history.
To walk through Kyoto is to walk through centuries of art, history, and spirituality, all woven together in a tapestry of unforgettable experiences.
Next, we journeyed to Toji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stands as a testament to Kyoto's enduring cultural heritage. Founded in 796, it was originally one of the three Buddhist temples allowed in the city when it became the capital of Japan. Hans was immediately drawn to the five-storied pagoda, the tallest wooden tower in Japan, its elegant form dominating the skyline. We learned that the pagoda has been rebuilt several times due to fires and earthquakes, yet it continues to stand as a symbol of resilience and spiritual devotion.

Inside the Kondo Hall, the main hall of Toji Temple, we were greeted by the serene presence of the Yakushi Buddha, flanked by his attendants. The intricate details of the statues and the peaceful atmosphere of the hall invited contemplation. We also explored the Kodo Hall, which houses a remarkable collection of 19 statues arranged according to a mandala, a symbolic representation of the universe in Buddhist tradition. The craftsmanship and artistry on display were simply astounding.
Our final temple visit of the day was to Tōfuku-ji Temple. Founded in 1236, Tōfuku-ji is renowned for its Zen gardens, which offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Lara was particularly fascinated by the Hojo Garden, designed by Mirei Shigemori in the 1930s. This garden uniquely surrounds the Hojo (the head priest's former living quarters) on all sides, each with a distinct character. The southern garden, a classic Zen dry landscape, features stones representing sacred mountains amidst meticulously raked sand. The western garden, with its checkerboard pattern of moss and azaleas, was equally captivating. I found myself lost in contemplation, appreciating the simplicity and harmony of the designs.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Yasakadori Enraku for lunch. Nestled behind Kenninji Temple, this restaurant offered a serene setting with private rooms, allowing us to savor our meal in peace. The delicate dashi flavors of the dishes were exquisite, perfectly complementing the rich drink menu. It was a delightful culinary experience that reflected the refined tastes of Kyoto.

For dinner, we indulged in a truly special experience at Premium Pound Gion. This teppanyaki restaurant is known for its Kobe beef and interactive dining experience. The chef was incredibly skilled, preparing each dish with precision and flair right before our eyes. The Kobe beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the entire meal was a celebration of Japanese culinary artistry. Hans, a man of few words when it comes to food, couldn't stop praising the chef's skill and the quality of the ingredients.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Bar K6, a sophisticated spot known for its extensive selection of scotch and cognac. While I opted for a classic cocktail, Hans enjoyed sampling some of the bar's impressive collection of Japanese whiskey. The ambiance was relaxed and refined, providing the perfect setting for a nightcap and reflection on the day's adventures.

We learned that Kyoto is currently hosting the KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival until May 11th, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to check it out. Also, the Miyako Odori performances at the Minamiza theatre will end on April 30th, so we were not able to see that either.
As we walked back to Hotel Rings Kyoto, the city lights twinkling around us, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Kyoto had once again revealed its magic, offering a blend of spiritual enrichment and culinary delights that nourished both body and soul. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, explore the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, and immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Nishiki Market. I can hardly wait to see what new wonders await us.

Before drifting off to sleep, I couldn't help but think about the many layers of Kyoto, the way it seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern innovations. It's a city that invites exploration, contemplation, and a deep appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. As I closed my eyes, I knew that the echoes of the thousand torii and the serene halls of the temples would linger in my heart long after we leave this enchanting place.
