Finding the Heart of Chefchaouen

Today was all about soaking in the everyday life of Chefchaouen, wandering without a strict agenda and letting the town reveal its secrets. It's amazing how much more you notice when you aren't rushing from one landmark to another. I find that I learn the most about a culture when I simply observe.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at Galitos. It's a cozy little spot, and I was eager to try some traditional Moroccan fare. Lena always teases me about my love for breakfast – she says it's my Hawaiian roots showing. I opted for a classic dish of eggs, olives, and khobz (Moroccan bread), along with a strong, sweet mint tea. Fuelled up and ready to go, I stepped out into the cool morning air, the blue hues of Chefchaouen welcoming me.

My first destination was Bab el Mahrouk, one of the main gates to the old city. The gate itself is a beautiful example of Moroccan architecture, adorned with intricate tile work. Passing through it felt like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets opened up into a maze of blue buildings, each one seemingly more picturesque than the last. I paused for a moment, just to take in the scene. The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – children playing, merchants calling out their wares, and the gentle murmur of conversations in Darija, the local dialect of Arabic. I made a mental note to practice my Arabic with the locals tomorrow.

The beauty of travel isn't always about seeing the grand monuments, but about discovering the quiet moments of everyday life.

Next, I wandered towards Place El Haouta, a bustling square in the heart of the medina. The square was alive with activity. Locals and tourists mingled, sipping mint tea at the cafes that lined the perimeter. Street performers entertained the crowds, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I found a spot on a bench near the central fountain and simply watched the world go by. I love these moments of observation. As a cultural consultant, I believe that understanding a culture requires more than just reading books or visiting museums. It requires immersing oneself in the daily life of the community.

Lunch was at Bar Oum Rabie, a local favorite known for its grilled meats and, surprisingly, its selection of beer and wine. I decided to try a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a clay pot. The tagine was rich and flavorful, filled with tender lamb, vegetables, and a blend of aromatic spices. It was the perfect meal to warm me up on a slightly chilly afternoon. I paired it with a glass of Moroccan wine, a surprisingly good complement to the tagine. As I ate, I struck up a conversation with a couple from Spain who were also traveling through Morocco. We shared stories of our travels and our impressions of Chefchaouen.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. I’d heard that Chefchaouen was known for its copper and lamps, so I headed towards the Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop I had seen mentioned. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted items, from intricately designed lamps to decorative pieces. I spent a good hour browsing, admiring the skill and artistry of the local craftsmen. I ended up buying a small copper lamp for Lena. I know she'll appreciate the intricate design and the warm glow it will cast in our Berlin apartment. It will be a little piece of Morocco to remind us of this adventure.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn back to Place El Haouta. The square had transformed since the morning. The crowds had thinned out, and the atmosphere was more relaxed. The setting sun cast a warm glow on the blue buildings, creating a magical effect. I sat at a cafe, sipping mint tea and watching the sky change color. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

Dinner was at Restaurant Jbaria, recommended by the owner of my hotel. It was a bit further from the main square, but well worth the walk. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and the menu featured traditional Moroccan dishes with a modern twist. I opted for a seafood tagine, which was absolutely delicious. The seafood was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the sauce was rich and flavorful. I savored every bite, knowing that this was likely my last traditional Moroccan meal of the trip. Chefchaouen has certainly delivered on the culinary front, and I'll be bringing some new recipes back to Berlin with me.

As I walked back to Hotel Casa Miguel, I reflected on my day. It had been a day of simple pleasures – good food, good company, and the beauty of Chefchaouen. Tomorrow is my last day in Chefchaouen. I plan to visit Sidi Bouchouka photo spot for some final panoramic views and explore the Kasbah before heading back to Tangier. I also hope to find time to stop by Café Mundial for a final taste of Moroccan coffee before heading to the airport. I'm already looking forward to sharing my experiences with Lena and Kai, and perhaps even inspiring them to visit this magical place someday. I am so grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience new cultures. It enriches my life in countless ways, and I hope to continue exploring the world for many years to come. The world is a vast and diverse place, and I believe that travel is one of the best ways to learn about it and about ourselves.

I am so glad I decided to come here. This trip has given me a renewed sense of purpose and appreciation for the simple things in life. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones we don't plan, but simply stumble upon along the way.

Until tomorrow,
Walter
