Finding the Heartbeat of Chefchaouen

Today was about soaking in the everyday rhythms of Chefchaouen, finding beauty in the simple routines and hidden corners that often go unnoticed. It's easy to get caught up in the picture-perfect blue streets, but I wanted to delve a little deeper and connect with the soul of this captivating town.

My day started with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Tissemlal. The restaurant is part of the Casa Hassan Hotel, and the traditional dishes were a fantastic way to begin the day. I enjoyed a local breakfast which consisted of goat's cheese, eggs and olive oil – fueling up for a day of exploration. The cozy terrace offered a magnificent view, allowing me to soak in the early morning atmosphere of Chefchaouen.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Hero Eagle. The views from up there were simply breathtaking. You get a panoramic vista of Chefchaouen nestled in the Rif Mountains. It's a perfect spot for photography, and I spent a good hour capturing the stunning landscape. The air was crisp, and the tranquility was a welcome escape from the bustling medina. Being there, I thought about Kai and how much he would have loved the view. I made a mental note to bring him here someday, maybe teach him a bit about photography too. He's at that age where he's starting to see the world with a more discerning eye, and I think a place like this would really resonate with him.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.

Next on my list was the Lavadero de la Ciudad, also known as the City Washhouse. This is where the local women traditionally wash their clothes, and it offered a fascinating glimpse into daily life in Chefchaouen. The washhouse itself is a beautiful structure with blue tiles that blend seamlessly with the town's aesthetic. I watched as women chatted and laughed while scrubbing clothes in the flowing water, a scene that felt both timeless and deeply connected to the community.

For lunch, I ventured to Chez Foad, a family-run restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. It was a delightful experience, and I felt like I was welcomed into their home. I tried the Pastilla and Tangine Chicken, both were delicious. Eating here was definitely a highlight.

As the afternoon waned, I sought refuge at Cafe Clock, a vibrant spot known as a cultural hub. It's more than just a cafe; it's a place where travelers and locals come together to enjoy music, art, and good conversation. I sipped on traditional mint tea on the rooftop terrace, overlooking the blue city as the sun began to set. The atmosphere was lively, and I felt a sense of connection with everyone around me. I even caught a bit of Oud Music with Said which was really enjoyable. It reminded me of evenings back in Hawaii, playing ukulele with friends and family.

Dinner was at Restaurant Dar El Salam, and it was a perfect end to the day. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the food was a delicious mix of traditional Moroccan flavors. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day's experiences and feeling grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in this unique culture.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Bab el Mahrouk and Place El Haouta, continuing my exploration of Chefchaouen's landmarks. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop, hoping to find a unique souvenir to bring back to Lena and Kai. Each day here seems to uncover a new layer of charm, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.

Tonight, as I settle in, I'm filled with a sense of contentment. Chefchaouen has a way of slowing you down, inviting you to appreciate the small moments and connect with the people around you. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most enriching travel experiences are the ones where you simply observe, listen, and allow yourself to be present in the moment. Mahalo nui loa, Chefchaouen, for another day of beauty and connection. I am falling in love with this place.

I realize that I forgot my sunscreen, a power adapter, and an umbrella back home in Berlin! I will need to find some sunscreen soon. I´ll need it for tomorrow's adventures!
