Discover more about Smith Mountain Fire Tower

Perched atop Smith Mountain, the highest point on Lake Martin, the Smith Mountain Fire Tower offers visitors a unique blend of history and natural beauty [1, 9]. Built in 1939 as a cooperative project between Alabama Power, the Tallapoosa County Forest Conservation Association, and the Alabama Forestry Commission, the tower served as a crucial fire detection point for over four decades [3, 4]. The tower was part of a network designed to protect the millions of newly planted trees in the area, after the land had been cleared of timber and suffered from significant erosion that threatened the capacity of the hydroelectric plant after Lake Martin was created [1, 5]. Standing 90 feet tall, the Aermotor Model LS-40 tower provided watchmen with a commanding view of the surrounding landscape, enabling them to quickly spot and report forest fires [1, 3, 5]. The tower remained in service until 1980 when aerial patrols and improved telephone service made it obsolete [1, 5]. Unfortunately, the site fell into disrepair and became a dumping ground [1, 5]. In 2010, the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association (CRATA) took ownership of the tower and began an extensive restoration project [1, 3, 5]. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and donors, the Smith Mountain Fire Tower has been fully restored and transformed into a popular tourist attraction [1, 5]. Visitors can climb the tower and enjoy stunning 360-degree views of Lake Martin and the surrounding countryside [6, 9, 12]. Informational exhibits at the base of the tower tell the story of the tower's history and the surrounding ecosystem [1]. The area around the tower also offers several hiking trails, ranging from easy to challenging [1, 2, 6]. The Walker Bynum Smith Mountain Tower Trail is a steep, 0.4-mile climb from the parking lot to the base of the tower [1, 2]. The Lakeshore Trail is a 2.4-mile loop that winds along the shores of Lake Martin [1, 2]. For experienced hikers, the Little Smith Mountain Loop Trail offers spectacular views and rock formations, but also includes some potentially dangerous sections with steep cliffs [1, 2, 7].
