Discover more about Smith Mountain Fire Tower

Perched atop Smith Mountain, the highest point of elevation on Lake Martin, the Smith Mountain Fire Tower offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and historical significance [2, 4]. Built in 1939 as part of a fire detection network by Alabama Power Company, in cooperation with the Tallapoosa County Forest Conservation Association and the Alabama Forestry Commission, the tower played a vital role in safeguarding the area's forests for four decades [3, 7]. Before the creation of Lake Martin in 1926, the land was cleared and suffered from erosion [5]. Alabama Power partnered with various organizations to reforest the area, leading to the construction of the fire tower [2, 5]. The Smith Mountain Fire Tower was the first of six fire towers and also hosted the district office of the Alabama Division of Forestry [2]. The tower is an Aermotor Company Model LS-40, made of prefabricated, galvanized steel [3, 5]. After being closed in 1980 and falling into disrepair, the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association (CRATA) acquired the site in 2010 and began restoring the tower [2, 5]. Today, visitors can climb the tower, explore hiking trails, and enjoy the stunning views of Lake Martin [1, 2]. The site also features remnants of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) era, including rock walls and steps [1, 5].
