Discover more about Cheaha State Park

Cheaha State Park, established in 1933, is a unique mountaintop retreat encompassing 2,799 acres in Clay and Cleburne counties, Alabama. Situated on the southernmost edge of the Appalachian Mountain chain, it boasts Cheaha Mountain, the highest point in Alabama, offering breathtaking views and a distinct natural environment. The name 'Cheaha' comes from the Muscogee Creek word meaning 'high place'. The park's landscape is characterized by ancient granite boulders and wind-sculpted trees, creating a rugged yet beautiful terrain. It is surrounded by the vast Talladega National Forest, offering visitors a sense of remoteness while still being within a short drive of several historic downtowns. Cheaha State Park was largely developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s. The CCC's work is still visible today in the park's numerous stone structures, including the Bunker Tower, Bald Rock Lodge, cabins, and trails. Visitors can explore the CCC Museum located in Bunker Tower to learn more about the history and legacy of the CCC's work in the park. The park offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, and birdwatching. Popular hiking trails include the Bald Rock Boardwalk Trail, Pulpit Rock Trail, and Lake Trail, each offering unique views and experiences. The park also features a lake for swimming and fishing, as well as picnic areas and playgrounds for families. For overnight stays, Cheaha State Park provides a range of options, from improved and primitive campsites to cabins, chalets, and lodge rooms. The Bald Rock Lodge, built by the CCC, is a historic group lodge that can accommodate large gatherings.
