Discover more about Flagg Mountain

Flagg Mountain, located in Coosa County, Alabama, is more than just a mountain; it's a testament to history, nature, and community spirit. As the southernmost peak of the Appalachian Mountain range with an elevation over 1,000 feet, it offers a unique glimpse into a diverse Alabama ecosystem. The mountain marks the beginning of the 335-mile-long Pinhoti Trail, which eventually connects to the Appalachian Trail in north Georgia, offering hikers a chance to trek all the way to Maine. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began developing Flagg Mountain into a state park. They constructed several log cabins, a stone dining hall, and the iconic 50-foot-tall lookout tower made from hand-carved stones. Though the park was never completed, the CCC's legacy remains, with the tower listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. After years of disuse, the Alabama Forestry Commission and volunteers have worked to restore the area, reopening the tower and cabins to the public. Today, visitors can explore over seven miles of interconnected hiking trails, including an ADA-accessible half-mile path. Climb the renovated tower for panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Spend a night in one of the CCC-era cabins or camp under the stars. Flagg Mountain is also a stop on the Alabama Birding Trail, attracting birdwatchers hoping to spot various species. With its rich history, stunning views, and diverse recreational opportunities, Flagg Mountain offers something for everyone.
