Discover more about Hills & Dales Estate

Nestled in the rolling hills of LaGrange, Georgia, Hills & Dales Estate offers a unique journey through time and landscape. The estate encompasses the Callaway family home, a beautiful Italian villa completed in 1916, and the remarkable Ferrell Gardens, one of America's best-preserved 19th-century gardens. The story begins in 1841 when Sarah Coleman Ferrell started developing the formal boxwood parterre garden, drawing inspiration from Italian Renaissance and Baroque designs. For over 70 years, she cultivated these gardens, incorporating religious symbols and motifs into her designs. The gardens, known as Ferrell Gardens or "The Terraces," gained national recognition for their beauty and intricate design. In 1912, textile magnate Fuller Earle Callaway purchased the estate and commissioned a home that would complement the existing landscape. Designed by Neel Reid of Hentz, Reid & Adler, the 13,000-square-foot Italian villa was completed in 1916. Three generations of the Callaway family tended to the gardens and estate, adding fountains, statuary, and other features. Today, visitors can explore the meticulously preserved Ferrell Gardens, wander through the historic greenhouse, and tour the Callaway family home, which is filled with original furnishings and family heirlooms. The estate also features a visitor center with museum exhibits and a gift shop. Allow at least two hours to fully appreciate the house, gardens, and visitor center.
