The Salem-Shotwell Covered Bridge, nestled within Opelika Municipal Park, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past. Originally constructed in 1900 by Otto Puls, the 75-foot bridge spanned Wacoochee Creek, connecting the communities of Salem and Shotwell in Lee County. The bridge's design features a Town Lattice truss, held together with hand-hewn oak pegs. This design was common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a cost-effective and durable way to build bridges. Over the years, the Salem-Shotwell Covered Bridge faced the challenges of time and weather. High water and erosion gradually took their toll, leading to its closure to motor traffic in 1994. In 2005, a devastating storm caused the bridge to collapse into the creek. However, the story doesn't end there. Recognizing the historical significance of the bridge, local citizens and organizations rallied to rescue and preserve it. In February 2006, the Lee County Commission gifted the bridge to the City of Opelika. The Opelika Kiwanis Club spearheaded the "Park the Bridge" project, working with the Opelika Parks and Recreation Board to relocate and rebuild the bridge in Municipal Park. Reconstruction began in 2007, and the bridge was shortened to 43 feet to fit its new location over Rocky Brook. Today, the Salem-Shotwell Covered Bridge stands as a testament to community spirit and a reminder of Alabama's rich history. Visitors can stroll through the park, admire the bridge's architecture, and imagine a time when covered bridges were vital transportation links. Opelika Municipal Park, where the bridge is located, is also known as Monkey Park. The park has a rich history itself, opening in 1955 and quickly becoming a popular gathering spot. The park was even home to a "Monkey Village" from 1956 to 1980, hence the nickname. Today, visitors can enjoy the Rocky Brook Rocket, a miniature train, playgrounds, picnic areas, and the Summer Swing Concert Series.
