The Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District in Eufaula, Alabama, invites visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the grandeur of the Old South. As one of the largest historic districts in eastern Alabama, it encompasses much of the oldest part of Eufaula and features over 700 architecturally significant structures. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the district showcases a remarkable collection of intact mid-to-late 19th-century small-town commercial buildings and the state's most extensive collection of domestic Italianate architecture. Founded in 1834 by Captain Seth Lore and others, the town's original layout included four main avenues – Livingston, Orange, Randolph, and Eufaula – intentionally spelling out Lore's name. Within the district, you'll find fine examples of Greek Revival cottages, Queen Anne residences, and Neoclassical Revival buildings. The Central Business District, located east of Eufaula Avenue, boasts a coherent collection of 19th-century commercial structures, including a rare Second Empire building and a cast-iron-front bank. Notable landmarks within the district include Shorter Mansion, a Classical Revival-style house museum that serves as the town's welcome center, and Fendall Hall, a state-owned house museum showcasing Italianate architecture. The Hart House, built around 1850, exemplifies pure Greek Revival architecture. The district also contains six churches, including the state's oldest High Gothic First Presbyterian Church, as well as two cemeteries and several neighborhood-based businesses.
