Buck's Pocket State Park, encompassing 2,000 acres across DeKalb, Jackson, and Marshall counties, is a captivating natural haven on Sand Mountain. The park derives its name from the unique canyon carved by South Sauty Creek, offering visitors a diverse landscape and rich history. The park's history dates back to 1966, with its official opening in 1971. Buck's Pocket has evolved into a beloved recreational area, drawing visitors with its scenic beauty and varied activities. Legend has it that the park got its name from either the large herds of deer in the area, a buck who leapt to his death from Point Rock, or a civil war draft dodger named Buck Berry who hid out in the area. Another enduring tale recounts how defeated Alabama politicians would retreat to Buck's Pocket after unsuccessful elections, seeking solace in the park's secluded setting. Buck's Pocket boasts a captivating blend of natural features. The highlight is Point Rock, an overlook providing panoramic views of the rugged landscape. The park features over 15 miles of hiking trails, catering to all skill levels. Explore the Indian House Trail, where ancient rock overhangs once provided shelter for Native Americans , or embark on a trek to Morgan's Cove. The Point Rock Trail follows Little Sauty Creek, passing mossy boulder fields and a scenic waterfall.
