Discover more about Confederate Tablets and Howell's Georgia Battery - Lookout Mountain

The Confederate Tablets and the location of Howell's Georgia Battery on Lookout Mountain serve as a somber reminder of the intense Civil War battles fought in and around Chattanooga. Lookout Mountain, with its commanding views of the Tennessee River and surrounding landscape, played a crucial role in the Chattanooga Campaign of 1863. Confederate forces occupied the mountain, using its height to monitor Union movements and attempt to cut off supply lines. The Confederate Tablets, erected by the Chickamauga-Chattanooga Battlefield Board, mark key locations and events related to the Confederate presence on Lookout Mountain. These tablets provide historical context, detailing troop movements, artillery placements, and strategic decisions made during the battles. Walking among these markers, visitors gain a deeper understanding of the Confederate perspective and the challenges they faced in holding the mountain. Howell's Georgia Battery, initially known as Martin's Light Artillery, was organized in May 1862. The unit saw action in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia. It earned distinction at Jackson, Mississippi, and Chickamauga. Captain Evan P. Howell took command after Captain Martin's promotion. On November 16, 1863, a section of the battery's 6-pounder guns, under the command of Lieut. R.T. Gibson, was positioned on the ground. During the engagement on November 24, the men were ready for action but unable to fire because Walthall's Brigade was engaged with the enemy in advance of the guns. Seeing the supporting line retiring rapidly in disorder, pursued by the enemy in overwhelming numbers and no possibility of removing the guns or repulsing the enemy, the men were marched off leaving the guns. The site is located within the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, which preserves and interprets the battlefields of the 1863 Chattanooga Campaign. Point Park, a ten-acre memorial park at the northern tip of Lookout Mountain, is a short distance away and offers panoramic views and additional historical exhibits. The Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center, located nearby, provides further information and context for understanding the battles that took place here.
