The site at 105 Commerce Street in Montgomery, Alabama, holds historical significance as the location of the first offices of the Confederate government. From February 22 to May 21, 1861, this site served as the initial base of operations for the newly formed Confederate States of America. During this brief period, Montgomery functioned as the Confederacy's capital. Delegates from seceded Southern states convened in Montgomery in February 1861 to establish the Confederate States of America. They drafted a provisional constitution and elected Jefferson Davis as the Confederacy's president. Davis was inaugurated on the portico of the Alabama State Capitol. The Confederate government relocated to Richmond, Virginia, in May 1861. Today, a historical marker stands at the corner of Bibb and Commerce Streets, commemorating the location. The marker was erected in 1911 by the Sophie Bibb Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and relocated to its original site in 1978.
