Discover more about Old Cahawba Archaeological Park

Old Cahawba Archaeological Park invites visitors to step back in time and wander through the eerie yet captivating remains of Alabama's original state capital. Founded in 1819 at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers, Cahawba served as the heart of state governance for only a brief period before the capital moved to Tuscaloosa in 1826. Despite this relocation, Cahawba blossomed into a prosperous river town, becoming a major cotton distribution point. However, Cahawba's fortunes turned with the Civil War. The Confederate government seized the town's railroad, and a prison for Union soldiers was established. Floods and the removal of the county seat to Selma in 1866 further hastened its decline. By the turn of the century, Cahawba was largely abandoned, earning its reputation as Alabama's most famous ghost town. Today, the Alabama Historical Commission meticulously preserves Old Cahawba as an archaeological park. Visitors can explore the landscape of ruins, relics and gravestones, imagining life in this once-bustling capital. Self-guided brochures are available to enhance the experience, and guided tours can be arranged by appointment. The park also offers opportunities for hiking, birdwatching and picnicking. Among the notable sites within the park are the remains of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Barker's Slave Quarters, and the town's cemeteries. Visitors can also explore the Clear Creek Nature Trail, offering scenic views of the Cahaba River. For those interested in the supernatural, Old Cahawba is known for its 'Haunted History Tours,' which explore the town's ghostly legends. These tours often highlight the story of Pegue's Ghost, a sorrowful spirit said to wander near her family's former home. Old Cahawba offers a unique blend of history, nature and mystery, making it a compelling destination for travelers seeking to connect with Alabama's past.
