Discover more about Cheaha State Park

Cheaha State Park, cradled in Clay and Cleburne counties, is more than just a park; it's an experience that elevates you—literally and figuratively. As Alabama's oldest continuously operating state park, established in 1933, it encompasses 2,799 acres, including Cheaha Mountain, the state's highest point at 2,407 feet above sea level. Often referred to as an 'island in the sky,' Cheaha offers breathtaking views and a sense of escape, surrounded by the vast Talladega National Forest. The park's history is deeply intertwined with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), who from 1933 to 1939, shaped much of what visitors enjoy today. The CCC constructed numerous structures, including stone cabins, bathhouses, pavilions, the iconic Bunker Tower, and the Bald Rock Group Lodge. They also created Cheaha Lake, a 6-acre body of water perfect for swimming, fishing, and paddling. Today, Cheaha State Park offers a diverse range of activities. Hike along the Pinhoti Trail, which connects to the Appalachian Trail, or explore shorter trails like the wheelchair-accessible Bald Rock Boardwalk Trail and the scenic Pulpit Rock Trail. Enjoy panoramic views from Bunker Tower or Bald Rock, and take a refreshing dip in Cheaha Lake. The park also features a restaurant, hotel, chalets, and modern campsites for overnight stays. Cheaha's location provides convenient access to nearby historic downtowns like Oxford, Heflin, and Talladega, offering a blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventure, a peaceful retreat, or a glimpse into Alabama's history, Cheaha State Park promises an unforgettable experience.
