Discover more about Neversink Cave Preserve

Neversink Cave Preserve, nestled in Jackson County, Alabama, safeguards Neversink Cave, a remarkable geological formation. Managed by the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. (SCCi), this preserve is home to a 162-foot deep open-air pit cave, often called the 'classic pit' by experienced cavers and celebrated as one of the most photographed caves in the TAG (Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia) region. Its allure lies in the dramatic vertical drop, the lush fern-covered ledges, and the seasonal waterfalls that cascade into the abyss, creating a scene of otherworldly beauty. The cave's opening measures approximately 40 feet in diameter, expanding to about 100 feet at the bottom. The SCCi acquired the property in 1995 through donations and fundraising, recognizing the need to protect this fragile ecosystem. Since then, the organization has been committed to maintaining the preserve's pristine natural state, balancing recreational access with ecological preservation. Visiting Neversink Cave Preserve offers an experience for various interests and skill levels. Seasoned cavers with the necessary expertise and equipment can descend into the pit, rappelling down the 162-foot drop and ascending back up using single rope technique (SRT). The SCCi emphasizes responsible caving practices to ensure visitor safety and protect the cave's delicate environment. Even without vertical caving experience, visitors can enjoy a rewarding experience with a moderately strenuous 0.6-mile hike to the cave's entrance, where one can marvel at the breathtaking view from above. The preserve is home to a diverse ecosystem, including rare and endangered ferns that thrive in the cave's unique microclimate. The seasonal waterfalls, fed by rainwater, create a dynamic and ever-changing spectacle. To ensure responsible access and minimize environmental impact, the SCCi requires all visitors to obtain a free permit before entering the preserve.
