Discover more about Seven States

Seven States is a scenic overlook situated atop Lookout Mountain, within the renowned Rock City Gardens. This vantage point provides visitors with a breathtaking panoramic view that, on a clear day, allegedly spans across seven states: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Historically, Lookout Mountain played a pivotal role during the Civil War, particularly in the Battle of Chattanooga. The mountain's strategic importance led to intense fighting, and the area is rich with historical significance. Later, Garnet Carter, the founder of Rock City Gardens, established the Seven States viewpoint as a gimmick to attract more tourists, and it has been a successful attraction ever since. Today, Seven States remains a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs, and those seeking awe-inspiring views. The site features a flag court with raised flags representing each of the seven states, adding to the patriotic ambiance. Visitors can stroll through the winding paths of Rock City Gardens, explore unique rock formations, and experience the thrill of crossing the Swing-A-Long Bridge before reaching the Seven States overlook. While the claim of seeing seven states has not been scientifically verified, the stunning vista and the historical significance of Lookout Mountain make Seven States a worthwhile destination.
